Publisher's summary

The new novel in the New York Times best-selling Dresden Files series.

No one's tried to kill Harry Dresden for almost an entire year, and his life finally seems to be calming down. For once, the future looks fairly bright. But the past casts one hell of a long shadow.

An old bargain has placed Harry in debt to Mab, monarch of the Winter Court of the Sidhe, the Queen of Air and Darkness - and she's calling in her marker. It's a small favor he can't refuse, one that will trap Harry Dresden between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and one that will strain his skills-and loyalties-to their very limits.

It figures. Everything was going too well to last....

Critic reviews

“Superlative.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.” (Booklist, starred review)

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.” (Library Journal)

always fantastic

Jim Butcher delivers another compelling story, and James Marsters delivers as the iconic Harry Dresden.

Not my favorite Harry...

While I always enjoy Dresden, the story on this one felt a bit thin. I also caught myself really noticing Harry's corny jokes more that usual.

Marsters is always perfect for this series.

Another great book with a few tech issues.

Great book but skipped or had missing parts 2 to 3 times. Nothing significant to the plot was missed but parts of conversations.

Jim Butcher Rocks

Would you listen to Small Favor again? Why?

Yes, most definitely. I'm never disappointed in Jim Butcher's books. I love the Dresden Files. They make me laugh out loud.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hands down ..... Harry. I love his humor and I hope his adventures never end.

What does James Marsters bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The first book in the series was a little rough. It sounded like James had a cold or was nervous. By the second book he really nailed it. I love his inflections to his voice. I can't imagine another narrator for this series. I plan to look for other books he's narrated after I've finished this series.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, unfortunately. I do not have that option. I have a very long ride to work and I actually look forward to it now since I know I will get to listen to more of the Dresden Files on my way.

Any additional comments?

There is so much to these books if you read the entire series. They are also written in such a way that you can read them stand alone. I really enjoy this series. The character development over the series is incredible. I highly recommend.

Great

I am going to go into withdrawl when I get to the last book in this series. All the characters keep getting deeper and more interesting. The writing gets better each and every book. Good good stuff!
