Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Nominee - Judges' Award for Best Paranormal Audiobook, 2011

"A new, strongly unique voice in the dark fantasy genre." (Kim Harrison)

"Hunter's very professionally executed, tasty blend of dark fantasy, mystery, and romance should please fans of all three genres." ( Booklist)
"Khristine Hvam portrays Jane with an adventurous-sounding voice edged with a twang.... Hvam’s voices for the Louisiana locals whom Jane learns to love and respect.... augment an intriguing story with hints of Native American mysticism." ( AudioFile)

Fun for the Commute

What did you like best about Skinwalker? What did you like least?

Needed a fun book for a long plane ride. Started this one in the air and it was fast and fun to listent to. Made the trip enjoyable. I've bought the next in the series now for commuting.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

It was pretty good. There was times it was hard to distinguish between characters talking (not quite the depth of different voices), but overall it worked.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I wouldn't

Not a big vamp fan

What made the experience of listening to Skinwalker the most enjoyable?

The narrator kept me involved in a story i would not normally listen to. The Native American twist was enough to keep me interested.

Which character – as performed by Khristine Hvam – was your favorite?

Jane of course.

Not Bad

This book reminds me of the Mercy Thompson series in many ways. Like Mercy, the main character is a tough girl that has an alternative form. Jane is a panther, while Mercy is a coyote. They both do not NEED anyone else. They are both good spirited and enjoy taking out evil. Both stories have a similar fay character background. Personally, I prefer Mercy Thompson, but both stories are similar. So if you're a fan of Mercy Thompson, you definitely need to read this book. If not, then don't waste your credits or time.

Strong Female Character

This is a top favorite series, in fact - probably the favorite of all the series downloaded to date. I should have written this first review much earlier & prior to my first review of this series (which was for book 8). As I've already shared, this is one of the best series written for this genre. The primary character is a strong female lead & someone I'm ever interested in learning more about. Faith Hunter is building what I believe are unique opportunities to fully develop not only her main character, Jane Yellowrock, yet also many of the other characters as her stories progress. Each story leaves me believing it's better than the next and always craving more!

The Beginning of greatness

It's really easy to consider yourself great when you have reached the top of your game. But unfortunately, when circumstances change you still have to go about proving your worth again to ensure that their is not a doubt.

Jane was experiencing new challenges. Not only was she in a new city but for the first time she was working for "civilized vampires." Added to this her "Beast" seems to know something about the killer vampire she is hunting. Something that is causing Jane to remember pieces of her forgotten childhood.

This book was the perfect introduction to a new series. The character development was excellent. The story was so well developed that hints to other adventures and clues to secrets to be revealed in continuing books in the series fell seemlessly into place in the current story. Plus the ending was surprising but not totally unexpected when you force yourself to review previous chapters. This is one that won't be archived. I will have to keep it out and available for future rereads.

Native American twist on the supernatural

Very entertaining! What a great main character - a strong, intelligent woman who has depth of character - a well developed protagonist that I really liked and could cheer for... The storyline moved along at a great pace with action, flashbacks and transformations - educating the reader on the culture/world of these characters. Narrator was flawless - meaning she didn't draw attention to herself rather had excellent distinctive voices for each character....love, love, love!!

So Interesting....

This is not your typical vamp series. Lots of new twists and lots of new combinations of lore. Great narration, too. I dare say "charming."
