Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper Extraordinaire, is back in this sexy, suspenseful novel of supernatural shenanigans.
When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously?
Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.
Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven… well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?

Favorite reads are urban fantasies featuring adults, with a firm twist of tasteful erotica, shaken well with plenty of humor & wit over ice.
Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series is fresh, interesting, and moves at a good pace that keeps my interest without feeling rushed. The characters are great, a little quirky, and unpredictable and the some of the dialogue is so hysterical that my occasional snorts and giggles get funny looks and the cocked eyebrow from husband sitting on the other end of the couch trying to read the news.
Even though there's humorous moments, I don't mean to give the impression the book is predominately a comedy, it is most definitely a paranormal fiction/mystery with plenty of story including some rather chilling moments.
There is sex, but not so much that you get the feeling the story is only a serving tray for its delivery. But it's well done enough that I get that warm, fuzzy feeling that I've come to love from my fiction/paranormal/mystery/romances.
Lorelei King does a stupendous job narrating. Her voice and inflections seem to be a perfect match to for text...great author/narrator team!
Yea for me that I've found this series, just my kind of read/listen. I just happen to like my scary with a good plop of funny topped with a nice rich foam of steamy sex (of the non-vulgar variety.) LOVING this series!
I have really mixed feelings about this series. There are aspects to it that I like (the mysteries, some of the humor, Charley's interactions with the secondary characters) and some I don't (some of the humor, Reyes) and I don't know if I care about it enough to continue. Before I started it, I would have said I loved snarky characters, but after reading this, I'm rethinking that. It did have some laugh out loud moments, but mostly it was a "heh" not a true lol and there were a lot of parts where I thought the author was trying too hard to be funny; it didn't feel natural. I also don't like Reyes. He's a jerk and a bit too creepy/stalkery for my taste.
I feel like I'm missing something because everyone else I know who is reading it loves it.
The narration is great. Lorelei King does a great job with the different character voices.
Oh, yeah! If for NO other reason, the smart mouth come backs the Charley Davidson comes off with. I swear, I called my friend Mary, told her buy the audio book, and that we were going to listen to it again together and take notes! It was an awesome story ~ LOVED it, but the zingers fly fast and hilarious throughout.
Honestly, the JD Robb books. Charley's smart mouth and kick ass attitude remind me so much of Eve Dallas. She's just an all around take charge kinda' gal. She's more irreverent than Eve (if you can BELIEVE it) but of course, we're talking paranormal here.
In this book? Wow, there were so many ~ but right off hand, and no spoilers because this is early on, is the dead guy in Charley's friend and assistant's car. Only it wasn't REALLY a dead, just his ghost, but of course, Charley can see him, because she IS the Grimm Reaper, and OMG, hilarity ensues.
It made me laugh so hard I couldn't keep it in. I was listening at work w/ headphones, I was kept giggling and laughing out loud, so people were giving me looks like I was crazy, and asking me what in the world I was listening to. LOVED it!
Love this series. Have book 3 loaded on my phone now to listen to ~ I had never listened to Lorelei King before. One of the things I do is when I find a narrator I really like I tend to buy other books they've narrated. She did a fabulous job w/ this series, so I'll be hunting down more books she's narrated. LOVED her! She brought Charley to life!
This is a great story. Charlie Davidson, grim reaper, is witty and funny as she tries to solve mysteries as she talks to the dead. The stuff she says is just hilarious. Plus she is surrounding by her family and friends that only add to the craziness of her life. And we can not forget Reyes Alexander Farrow, the man's sexiness jumps out at you from the story.
One of my favorite scenes in this book involves the homeless man, I think the conclusion of his small story was just perfect.
I did listen to this book. Lorelei King does a fabulous job with the narration. The way she reads teh story kept me engaged and really made Charlie come to life.
I love this urban fantasy series. It has a little bit of everything in it-paranormal, romance, mystery, and adventure. I can't wait for the next book to see who is bothering Charlie now and what Reyes has in store for her.(
LOVE this writer and her story, made me laugh out loud more than once, the heroine i s not all super natural and has a really sarcastic side.
I've always been a avid reader so now I'm a avid listener. I prefer the paranormal genre but I do like to switch things up. It's boring if you don't have variety. Of course I do love the romance and the hotter the better. Also, you can't beat a good thriller filled with suspense and a ending you can't even guess at until the very end.
This is just one of those series that I saw but I just skipped on by it due to other books catching my attention more. Boy I'm glad I finally stopped and took this series out for a try. I just love it and now I'm hooked and I will continue on the Charley Davidson path. I love the humor and the Grim Reaper combination.
So YES use those credits for this series!!!!!
I love this series. It's funny! The author has a similar writing style to Janet Evanovich although she has a supernatural spin on her story. I love stories with random funny bits added in it; makes it a little more entertaining. I would recommend it.
I'm a professional dog trainer who loves to read. I have degrees in English and Adult Ed. I love well written books that take me away.
Exciting series, well read by Lorelei, as usual. I enjoy the humour tempered by trials and tribulations - none of which are too much to bare for a reader who feels sensitized by what's going on in the real world. Great escapism and I'll be buying it all.
Professional audio producer, interested in any story well told.
After reading the first book I was fascinated by the characters. This sequel seems like it was rushed past the editors and was not nearly as refined a story line.
I gave it a chance because audible recommended it and I wanted to have a new series I really enjoyed. I just can't get into the characters or the storyline however.
