Publisher's summary

When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels.

That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle - led by the conniving and powerful Mason Faim - that stole his life.

Though nearly everything has changed, one constant remains: his friend Vidocq, a 200-year-old Frenchman who has been keeping vigil for the young magician's return. But when Stark's first stop saddles him with an abusive talking head that belongs to the first of the circle, a sleazy video store owner named Kasabian, Stark discovers that the road to absolution and revenge is much longer than he counted on, and both Heaven and Hell have their own ideas for his future.

Gritty and very entertaining

I haven't spent a lot of time with this genre but this book has a gritty yet winsome strut.
Stark is a fun character that you want to learn more about. Really all the main characters draw you in.
I throughly enjoyed it. Lots of foul language and violence but this makes the book

I will be downloading the second book.
The narrator was brilliant!!!

Constantine meets Deadpool

Great story and character development. Starting the series over again and it’s still awesome. Highly recommend especially if you enjoy Dresden or Atticus!

Just what one needs

I read the book a few years ago and now, that I can't have it at the moment, it feels good to listen to it again.
MacLeod Andrews is a very talented voice actor and I love the emotions he puts into the characters.
I heartily recommend!

Don't listen to the series back to back

the sandman slim books are fun... like supernatural tv series fun.. Sandman slim has a very take it or suck it sarcastic tone, that never lets up.. No tonal variations in the story at all. SOOOOOOOOOOO I would not recommend listening to them back to back. Otherwise ... for me at least it became over whelming and I just stopped listening.. Bought them all though!! Just gonna do the rest with other books in between;)

Original and Compelling

Very unique story centered on Stark who just got back from hell after he was unjustly sent there. Now he is out to seek revenge. Well drawn characters and a solid plot that moves along with just the right amount of action. I would consider this a thriller/mystery/suspense novel. Good narration that added to the uniqueness of the characters and the novel.

Loved it

If you are adverse to cursing this is not the book for you. I this book is a great urban fantasy read. I loved the writer's descriptions of the protagonist's dingy and bleak world.
