Publisher's summary

When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels.

That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle - led by the conniving and powerful Mason Faim - that stole his life.

Though nearly everything has changed, one constant remains: his friend Vidocq, a 200-year-old Frenchman who has been keeping vigil for the young magician's return. But when Stark's first stop saddles him with an abusive talking head that belongs to the first of the circle, a sleazy video store owner named Kasabian, Stark discovers that the road to absolution and revenge is much longer than he counted on, and both Heaven and Hell have their own ideas for his future.

A Hell of a lot of fun...literally

Would you consider the audio edition of Sandman Slim to be better than the print version?

Macleod Andrews has just become one of my favorite Narrators. His characterizations for this book feel spot on and is fun to listen to. So yes, the audio version to me at least is better than the print.

What other book might you compare Sandman Slim to and why?

The only thing I no of that even comes close to this type of book is the Priest comic book series. But I admittedly haven't read much in this genre.

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't, but will definitely be on the lookout for books read by him.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed it really is full of one-liners. At first I thought it a little over done, but they just kept coming and then they grew on me.

Any additional comments?

I'm on book 3 of 4 now and really enjoying the series. It's a big change from what I usually read and am loving every minute of it.

Great idea for a movie!

Enjoyed listening but this would be better as a movie. Great story line, just needs visual special effects!

Great book

The story is great, characters are fun, and the story moves along at a good pace. I feel some of the character developtment comes to quick, and the main character can seem a bit unrealisticly dense at times. Already on book two and I think it's getting better as the strory progresses.

How have I missed this?

I stumbled on Kadrey by way of my wife bringing home a book, The Wrong Dead Guy. I read the first chapter and was interested, but wanted to check out others first since it was a second book in a series. Then I found his Sandman Slim series.

While I can't sit down and read as much as I'd like, I can crank on Audiobooks while driving and working and this one was fantastic. Between the narrators performance and the story line, it had me gripped and wanting to kick it back on as soon as possible. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series.

Angels, demons and noir

Fun romp through a world where magic and religion collide. Very noir, with the grumpy antihero of a thousand vices. Some excellent dark humor alongside.
