Publisher's summary

Car mechanic Mercy Thompson has always known there was something different about her, and not just the way she can make a VW engine sit up and beg. Mercy is a shapeshifter, a talent she inherited from her long-gone father. She's never known any others of her kind. Until now.

An evil is stirring in the depths of the Columbia River - one that her father's people may know something about. And to have any hope of surviving, Mercy and her mate, the Alpha werewolf Adam, will need their help....

Have Mercy! Listen to another Mercy Thompson chiller.

Critic reviews

"An outstanding urban fantasy novel with some well-loved and well-traveled characters...The way [Briggs] writes about all of the different fictional supernatural creatures is fascinating and keeps you on your toes.” (Examiner.com)

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

Best one yet!

This is my favorite book in the series. I love getting to explore Mery's heritage with her and have this be a story regarding her ancestry. Her and Adam finally being married makes my heart happy!

Left me confused.

I was really enjoying the whole series, read it all in a weeks time. I was so happy to get to the last book to see how it would all end to find myself asking 'Who wrote this one?" I guess I was expecting more with Mercy and the pack them working out their difference, but she jumped to tie up a loose end with Mercy and her Dad. I did not think this was a loose end due to the fact the guy was suppose to of been dead this whole time. All the riddles he speaks in and some of the other's left me confused as to what was going on and who was who. Never did manage to quit understand If that man was her Dad or not. Then we end the book with Mercy's letter to Adam....Didn't she live? So why are we ending the book with the letter?
I felt jilted since we never got to see them settle all the differences and never really got to see the romance between the H/H. Now I ask, was this really the last book in the series??? I hope not, too many things were left undone.

One more in a very good series

This story includes many previous characters, but adds quite a few new ones, and I hope we get to see at least some of them again. The story has moved in a new direction, adding depth to the story and the characters. I especially enjoyed the humor - there seems to be more of that this time. I'm really looking forward to book 7! This series is one that I have listened to several times, and I plan to continue to replay. Ms. Briggs writes a very good story, and Ms. King brings it to life.

Best in the series so far.

I've been critical of previous books in this series because of some of the choices that Patricia Briggs had made with Mercy Thompson as a character. This book, however, makes up for that. The challenge Mercy faces in this book is quite unique, even for this series. You also get a real sense of the love between Mercy and Adam in this book, something that I felt was glaringly absent from the previous books. My only complaint is that many of the male characters voiced by Lorelei King sounded too similar, which made following along in some parts incredibly difficult.

Addictive!

If you could sum up River Marked in three words, what would they be?

In River Marked Patricia Briggs hits her stride in this series, maturing the relationships between and among characters, and expanding the characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mercy continues to evolve and become more complex while staying true to character. We learn more about her and her past and her relationship to the worlds she inhabits. She is a very interesting person, and true to herself.

Which character ??? as performed by Lorelei King ??? was your favorite?

I confess: I would gladly listen to Lorelei King read the newspaper every day. She is absolutely the best, and she is the reason I decided to try this series of books. Her characterization of the vampires is fantastic.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I enjoyed the tension between Adam and Mercy when he couldn't enter the water and she had to save the day. Go Mercy!

Any additional comments?

This is a very enjoyable series, and the books keep getting better and better. Ms. Briggs has created a very interesting world and convinces us that it is perfectly normal for a VW mechanic to transform into a coyote. A cute one. If you are an author, writing interesting books featuring interesting women (and men), seek out Lorelei King to bring the story and your characters to life.

Columbia River monster

What made the experience of listening to River Marked the most enjoyable?

Reading a story that takes place in an area that you studied as a child with both European and American Indian cultural background is most enjoyable. I live in Washington state and have imost of my life

Who was your favorite character and why?

As usual Mercy is my favorite character with her flaws and her strength. She is always so willing to do the right thing.

Have you listened to any of Lorelei King’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I have listened to her before and found her spot on. I will have to find someone from that area that can pronounce Celilo Falls to know if I have learned it wrong.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

When Mercy has chased off all of her babysitters and she is sitting in the basement. She left her phone up the stairs and Stephen the Vampire is the only one that can help her.. this made me cry.

Any additional comments?

After having a surprise wedding, Mercy meets her almost father.
