Publisher's summary

The White Council of Wizards has drafted Harry Dresden as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in Chicago. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in the Windy City, but it's all in a day's work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob.

Critic reviews

"One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.” (Cinescape)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot." (Booklist)

Outstanding narration!

Listening to the entire series second time around now. Great narration, just perfect! And I love how Jim Butcher weaves the theory and practice of magic into his stories, explaining what Dresden is doing and why.

The Best So Far!

Out of all of the books in the series up to this point, this is at the top of my mind. The pacing is smooth, the characters are at their most dynamic, and all the pieces come together and loop around in a beautiful climax.

I think this is the book that made me fall in love with The Dresden Files!

Getting better and better

The series continues to improve which seems uncommon in these long series. The characters are more developed, the story more intriguing, and the tension growing all while having each book stand on its own. You want more but you don't leave the book frustrated with nothing completed like Game of Thorns does.

Best So Far

I love this book series, but I have to say this one is far and away my favorite so far. It had a lot of history to draw upon, and it did. Years of character and plot development really came together here.

I Save Dresden, and Read One a Year

My reading candy. Make it yours. Harry Dresden is like a relative I look forward to seeing once a year at Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa.

AMAZING

I loved everything about this book and all the previous Dresden Files books. James Marsters is absolutely captivating as he narrates the adventures of Harry Dresden. He not only ‘reads’ the book well, he actually becomes every character Harry comes across in the books. I can hardly tell that it’s the same person reading for every bit of dialogue. He can only be as good as the material he’s reading. Jim Butcher is a fantastic writer. Seeing the uncertainty and the doubts and the real gritty things Harry has to go through makes the character so much more real than if he was always cool and collected. I will never stop raving about these books and the performance of them.

These books just keeps getting better and better!

I am very much enjoying the Dresden files series on Audible. Butcher’s writing is largely only predictable in terms of character continuity. James Marsters must be really enjoying exercising a full repertoire of character voices, which he does brilliantly. I don’t know if this is new or I just noticed that he has the tiniest bit of foreshadowing in the way Harry states which chapter we’re on.

However, I have noticed a few production glitches in most if not all of the books and this one has many. Lines are repeated. I only hope none are dropped but how would I know?
