A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Even when finding oneself engaged in interstellar war, good form must be observed. Our story is set thousands of years after the Terran Exodus, where two powerful, planet-dominating families - the elegant House Jakabitus and the less refined Hahn Empire - have reached a critical point in their generations-long war. Master Hennik, the Hahn ruler's only son, has been captured, and the disposition of his internment may represent a last and welcome chance for peace.

After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim. Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

Publisher's summary
An io9 Can't Miss Science Fiction and Fantasy title in March 2014.
Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little “tweaks” have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.
What could possibly go wrong?
An American hacker in King Arthur’s court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlin…and not, y’know, die or anything.
Featured Article: The top 100 fantasy listens of all time
When compiling our list of the best fantasy listening out there, we immediately came up against the age-old question: Is this fantasy or science fiction? The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

Just outside Los Angeles, a prisoner hidden away for 70 years sits up, gets off the bed and disappears through a solid wall. In Australia, a magician impresses audiences by producing real elephants. Nobody realizes it's not an illusion. Across the world, individuals and organizations with supernatural power suddenly detect the presence of something even they can't understand. At the center of it all, Seb Varden, a 32-year old musician with a secret in his past, slits his wrists, is shot dead and run over on the freeway.

Loved it, But I'm Biased
Any additional comments?
I think the author did a knock-out job with this book. I loved the concept, which flowed pretty well into the main plot of the book. I admit it took a little while to get there, but I was never bored with the exposition. Many people seem to have complained that it took too long to get into the plot, but I thought it seemed about right.
The main strength of this book is that it is incredibly self-aware. It knows what it is, and what kind of experience that it is trying to provide the reader. If you like dry humor and pop-culture references mixed with 20th century geekdom, then this book has what you are looking for. My best explanation is that it is a much more sarcastic "Ready Player One" with a significantly less-serious plot.
Since I have made it clear that I think this is a great book, I will point out the two things that may turn you off of the book, but can be looked over if you're in the audience it is clearly targeted for. First, the antagonist is pretty one-dimensional. Without giving any spoilers, you are pretty unclear what the main conflict in the plot is until rather late, and once you figure that out, you realize that the villain was made even for the sake of concluding the plot. Also, there are many logical plot-holes that the author doesn't attempt to fill.
So, both of these complaints are if you take the book too seriously, which you clearly shouldn't. You won't have a life-altering catharsis or get a new world-view. But if you are member of the proudly-nerdy subset, and want something that will entertain and leave you wanting more, I highly recommend this book.

So much fun!
Just a really fun, well done story. Looking forward to the sequels. I recommend as a fun original story with enjoyable witty dialog.
