Publisher's summary

In New York, there's a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side. Of course, most humans are oblivious to this, but Cal Leandros is only half-human. His father's dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares - and he and his entire otherworldly race are after Cal.

He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal's dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they've always wanted him....

Highly entertaining

Patrick Lawler could bring the encyclopedia britanica to life with his performances. It is a tremenous treat for all of us urban fantasy readers to discover him as the voice of Cal Leandros. Nightlife is a great start to a long series, I'm thinking a little Dresden, but a bit less mature and gets quite a bit wacky when the real baddie pops in about half way through the book (don't want to spoil it!) A fun listen. Hope we get to hear the whole series!

Loved every minute!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I loved listening to this book. The narrator did a great job with the characters and the story moved quickly so there weren't any places in the book where my attention started to drift.

Any additional comments?

I loved this book but I wish Audible had all of the other books in the series.

Amazing

Entertaining, paced well, great character development. The first book on the series was thoroughly enjoyable.

unusual but good story

I basically enjoyed this story, it was a unsusal story but interesting. narrator used a rough gravelly voice for main character which I found grating.

Just as I Remembered

I read these books awhile back and really enjoyed them- I stumbled upon them on audible and thought I would give it a shot via audible. It was great that I had forgotten certain things so it was like reading them for the first time again. The narrator was not my favorite- not that he did a bad job- I am sure he would be lovely in another capacity, but his voice did not encompass who Cal and Nico are.

Entertaining, potential for the whole series

first book in the series, and obvious Thurman is trying to get her legs under her. Interesting characters and universe, has real potential. notice they changed narrators for test of the books. s good move. Lalwlor is talented, but the wrong fit call who needs to be darker and less snarky.

Amazing

I love this book series. I have re read and listen to them several times. The characters are unique. Plot is different than anything I have listened to. Which is hard because I have listened to over 1000 books.

Don't bother

As others above me have stated I found a lot of the dialogue (i.e. the constant banter and back-and forth between the two brothers ) to be forced, unrealistic and quickly tiresome to listen to. I also found it to be way too slow-paced as there were no action scenes during the first 3 hours and I just couldn't bring myself to listen to any more as I felt that my time would be better spent listening to any other audio book that would actually grip me from the very start or at least within the first hour.
Also as someone else here has already mentioned I thought that when voicing the main character the narrator sounded way too old and world-weary given that Caliban is supposed to be in his early twenties.

Wrong voice for this young bad ass.

I love this book series, but the voice they chose to act out the young, 20 year old, Cal Leandros sounds more like a 40 years old drinker. Bad choice. The narrator does a great job in the acting role and captures the feeling of the book, but no one would buy that voice as a 20 year old who drips with sarcasm. I do want to hear the rest of the series come to life, but may be some one like Holter Graham could capture the youthful ring and deep torment that is Cal.

I forced myself to finish it, not worth it

it would have probably liked it in middle school, but as an adult it was so cliche and slow. I wish I listened to the reviews cause this was terrible. barely anything happened the whole book. The main character is overly emo, the brother so overwritten and annoying. the brother was described like what katana wielding teen boys think they are. I'm surprised my eyes aren't stuck behind my sockets I rolled my eyes that hard that often.

if you're still in middle school you may enjoy this, but if you've graduated past the twilight books pass this one. for your own sanity.
