Publisher's summary

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shape-shifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta. Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shape-shifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute - and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer - but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap.…

Hurt, Trust, and Honor

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would absolutely recommend this book to a friend. It presents one of Kate's more significant challenges. Is everything she believes in a lie? Her strong relationship with Curran and the pack - faltering? Her perception of her father and his supporters - mistaken? Kate is both emotionally and physically hurt. Honor and trust are called into question - what does the future hold?

What other book might you compare Magic Rises to and why?

Only thing I could compare it to would be the previous books in the series...all containing interesting characters, action, and intrigue.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved Kate sparring with Hugh - stunning!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Was it all just a big mistake? What if everything you thought you knew was wrong?

Any additional comments?

One note - Hugh's 'voice' changed from the previous encounter (Magic Strikes). He had an odd, noticeable voice previously. The new voice is not bad, just a distinct change.

ratings....

I'm of two minds on this. I have continued the series because 1) I got them on sale some time back and 2) a lot of people seem to love it. I'm trying to figure out why.
I do enjoy the world building. It's fairly complex while making sense. I like the details.
The narrator bothers me. This is purely subjective because she does read according to what she sees. That can't be argued. What I don't like is the dramatic ways she does some of the text. It's cringey at times. I also don't like the speech impediment she gives herself in places. It doesn't continue throughout so it isn't a medical issue(which I would never make fun of or count off for-this is something she does on purpose for the sake of making the voice distinct I guess).
I didn't have as much of an issue this time with feeling like I'd skipped something when I hadn't.

Rises above expectations!

Love the story and eagerly await every story of Post-shift Atlanta. You never know what adventure awaits or what new facet of Kate and Curran's relationship will be revealed. In addition, the cast of characters in their motley crew is expanded in this book. We are introduced to Jim's sister and find out more about peripheral characters from the previous novels--Eduardo the werebuffalo, George (Mahon's daughter), and Aunt B. Another can't put it down, must read from Ilona Andrews!

Entertaining

The Ilona Andrews team does it again with another entertaining story with plenty of action and a side of sexual tension. I adore this series and will keep coming back for more.
