Publisher's summary

Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-read robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world - all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asmiov’s trademark.

The three laws of Robotics: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm 2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov changed our perception of robots forever when he formulated the laws governing their behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot through a series of interlinked stories: from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future - a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete.

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Much better than the movie.

Loved it. The imaginative mind converging with hard science. Definitely one of Asimov's best.

Still highly relevant

Facinating exposition of the dillemas faced by society related to reliance on ML and CNN's. What would an autonomous car do if 2 kids ran into the road?

Disappointed

I read, I robot & even have it in paperback. This is NOT, I Robot. I Robots is a part of Robots of Dawn. It is one story similar to Will Smiths Character.
While the stories are pretty good in this book. I just had my hopes up for the books I love the most & so that is why I am disappointed.

Really wanted to like it...but

Just never really got into the story. I can't say it was bad...just meh...at least for me. Hubby read it years ago and really liked it. So I guess just not my cup of tea, even though I read mostly syfy.

The book is a classic, the reader is phenomenal.

A friend recommended I read this after she was appalled at me stating I really liked the movie. I must say after completing this the two do not line up at all. Regardless, while I enjoyed the book, I am still a fan of the movie as well. The reader for this audible does a fantastic job. Definitely recommend it.

I can see where they got the plot for the movie

but don't go into this thinking you're going to be getting an audio version of the movie. this book, while decades ahead of it's time and quite wrong about how quickly we'd develop technologically, is done as an interview between a journalist and Dr Calvin who relates stories in a flashback fashion.

Over all I found the story fascinating and telling of the psychology of the time it was written in and while I enjoyed the performance, the whole thing felt a little too much like radio or listening to a journalists personal recordings and notes.

If you're interested in the origins of the movie and want an interesting view of robotics that isn't Terminator, give this a listen and give it a chance. Enjoy!

Good storytelling but too optimistic

Entertaining and interesting, especially considering the time it was written but it's natively utopian and does not really resonate as a great work, best part is the 3 laws
