Publisher's summary

A collection of 20 classic short stories by Isaac Asimov, author of the Foundation series, featuring the definitive and only in-print version of “Nightfall”

From one of history’s most influential writers of science fiction comes this collection of twenty short works of fiction, arranged in order of publication from 1941 to 1967. Compiled by Asimov himself, who prefaced each story with an introduction, it begins with “Nightfall”, the tale of a world with eternal sun that is suddenly plunged into total darkness and utter madness. Published when the author was only twenty-one, “Nightfall” was arguably Asimov’s breakout work, making such an impression that, almost thirty years later, the Science Fiction Writers of America voted it the best science-fiction short story ever written.

The other stories in the collection span far and wide: Machines that learn to think for themselves - and direct their thoughts to overturning the establishment. The discovery that Earthlings are being destroyed by a mysterious kind of psychological virus. A day when walking outdoors becomes a sign of psychosis. And many more. Twenty stories: each riveting, each a classic.

Top notch Science Fiction

Very enjoyable stories with additional insights about how the stories came to be. A look into the life of an icon.

A nice introduction to Asimov

I’d not listened to or read any of Isaac Asimov’s work before. This was delightful!

Absolutely fantastic collection!!!!!!

This is the first bit of Asimov I've read, and I absolutely loved it! I always really like short stories and I'm glad I started with these ones. It's interesting that nightfall is rated to be one of the best ones supposedly because I loved the other one's more. Please stick through the 1st few. These stories are amazing!

narrator takes a second to get used to

I thought the narrator might not be the best choice because he has a kind of gruff military voice but after the first couple of stories I got used to it and he's definitely still a very good narrator

Great anthology

Asimov's preface of each story are interesting bits of history. Including some stories I have never heard or read before and many old favorites.

Future and science

Very well told stories, very futuristic in nature and very well planned out. Well worth the credits.

Entertaining

Every now and then I feel like I need to pay tribute to old science fiction and it usually disappoints (not usually bad, but more nothing special). This was the first exception in a long time and I enjoyed most of these stories as well as the backgrounds to them.
