Publisher's summary

Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future-allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success.

But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful. And thanks to his abilities, Alex can predict that by taking the job, his odds of survival are about to go from slim to none…

Critic reviews

"Harry Dresden would like Alex Verus tremendously - and be a little nervous around him. I just added Benedict Jacka to my must-listen to list." (Jim Butcher)

If you are missing Dresden...

As a huge fan of The Dresden Files, this story caught my eye and I decided to give it a try. I was NOT disappointed! There is even a slight allusion to Dresden which gave me a chuckle. I loved the story and look forward to the rest of the series.

One of the better urban fantasy books

Really enjoyed the author's writing style and I think he is doing a good job of building an extended cast of recurring characters - a MUST in any ongoing series. Liked his handling of the magic system in his world as well. One of the problems I have with a lot of urban fantasy books is that the main characters are jerks but I really like Alex Verus so far.

The only problem I had with the narrator is that he seemed way older than I pictured the character to be in the novels. When I decided to take this as an older narrator recounting stories of his life then I really enjoyed his performance. Pleasure to listen to - loved the accent.

BRITISH VERSION OF DRESDEN

It started a little slow but I really enjoyed this book. I had heard about it a few times but, never looked into listening to it until now.

I feel it is going to get better and better as the series continues.

All the Good Story Lines Have Been Use?

The author started out with a couple of clever references to a certain popular urban wizard/P.I. Unfortunately, the story proceeded to be a nearly item-for-item rehash of The Dresden Files. Even so, it wasn't a bad listen. The story moved right along. The villains were properly villainous; the good guy saves the day at the end with the help of his mismatched companions. The narrator did a good job.

I haven't yet decided whether to try the second book in the series.

The English Dresden

any fan of the Dresden files will feel at home with this book. while the narrator is no James Matters, the narrator still does a good job.

A nice compliment to Iron Druid and Dresden

I know it was a tip o' the hat to the Dresden Files (Dresden is even alluded to in beginning) and I was ok with that. Overall not a bad way to spend the day.
