Don’t miss the eagerly anticipated epic new fantasy from Christopher Paolini—Murtagh, coming 11.7.23!

A new adventure hatches in Book One of the Inheritance Cycle, perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings! This New York Times bestselling series has sold over 40 million copies and is an international fantasy sensation.

"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity."—The Washington Post

When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and, gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

Critic reviews

"It's an impressive start to a writing career that's sure to flourish." (Booklist)

"Doyle's range of accents is perfect for the multiple characters of this epic....On paper Eragon is a sprawling fantasy, filled with obvious nods to Tolkien and too many convenient plot devices. But on audio, it fills the ears with vivid characters, witty dialogue, and nail-biting battle scenes set in a magical world where a beautiful blue dragon and her rider are at the noble center of it all." (AudioFile)

"An impressive epic fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)

Heard the Audio, Bought the Print

I enjoyed Eragon in this audio format so much that a few days after coming to the end I went out and bought the hardcover edition. Partly for the outstanding dustjacket design, partly for the maps on the endpapers, and partly so my 14 year-old daughter could read it.

Eragon has a winning protagonist, a brisk plot, a very cool female elf mage, solid "history", plausible magic, vivid scenery. Studded throughout with sly references to other fantasy fiction. What's not to like?

Does Paolini owe a debt to Tolkein and LeGuin? Sure, but no more than Tolkein and LeGuin owe George MacDonald and the Brothers Grimm!

Gerard Doyle's reading performance is beyond praise. I'd like to hire him to record my answering machine messages in his dragon voice.

Wonderful reading!

I hated to see the book end. I am even more sorry that the next book is not available to see where fate next leads this dragon rider!

Excellent!

I admit that this was my first audiobook, but I was SO impressed with the quality of the narrator(not to mention the wonderful book itself)! I had seen the movie, but heard the book was better (which is so often the case) and this was the perfect way to fit reading it into my busy schedule! Wonderful book & great narrator!

Eragon

What an incredible book for such a young writer. I loved the book and overall was highly entertained most of the way. I thought there was a texture lacking that might only come with life experience and personal challenge. When he comes out with a sequel, I'll read it for sure.

I'm disappointed ... :-)

... that book 2 hasn't been published yet, so who knows when Audible will be carrying it!

I very much enjoyed both the story and the reading, and my only disappointment was that I couldn't start the 2nd book right away. This was one of those books where several times after finishing my 55 minute commute I sat in the car and listened for a few minutes longer.

It isn't as rich or well-written as Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and I wish that Paolini gave his protangonist a name that wasn't so similar to Tolkien's Aragorn, but these aren't really complaints. This is an impressive first work from such a young author.

Gerald Doyle's reading was excellent -- I'll be disappointed if he isn't the reader for book 2. ;-)

felt like a little kid again

I really enjoyed listening to Eragon. The story was detailed and a little long in places but never boring, the detail felt necessary like they are setting up the rest of the books to come. You really get to know and sympathize with the characters and there is so much foreshadowing that I am excited to read the rest of the books to find out if my predictions were correct. I am glad I listened to the book instead of reading it. The narrator did a fantastic job and some of the words like the names for places and the magic words would have slowed me down reading but listening to it the story had a flow to it that was not interrupted by trying to figure out words. I felt like a little kid again total engrossed in listening to a story being read to me. I am looking forward to continuing with this series. I would classify this as young adult epic fantasy. If you enjoyed Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and those kinds of books you should try this series.

better dragon voice please!!!

loved experiencing Eragon from a different perspective. the story felt spot on to the book. only issue was a couple of the voices, Sapphira's dragon voice was quite horrendous, almost as if a drunk yoda learned how to speak proper English. solembum was similar and at times male characters would mesh n hard to follow who was saying what unless you've already read eragon. perhaps another voice performer? female for sapphira(same rumble voice) and other side characters to help distinguish voices at times??

Awesome!!!

I totally loved this book. I listened while at the gym. I worked out longer so I could listen longer. The narrator held my attention, what an excellent voice. I just purchased the second installment, can't wait to get started.

Wonderful story

I have both read this book and listened to it and loved it. As this is the authors first one have to forgive some small errors in the story. Even if it is not to original is it an great story, and one will find it hard to write something new now a days without ending up with that some of the readers recognizing some part from authors. I have read Tolkien, Goodkind, Jordan, Kerr, Brooks and several more and must say that Paolini have deserved a place in my bookcase among the best fantasy authors. If you loved the other authors you will love Paolini. I cant wait for the third book.

Bravo!!!

I liked this story so much that I limited my listening time so it would last longer. Pure, take you away from everything fantasy, just like fantasy should. It let me slip away from this world for a time and enter a very magical place. Looking forward to the rest of the story.
