Publisher's summary

Legendary science fiction author Orson Scott Card calls Brandon Sanderson a writer to watch.

Once the godlike rulers of the capital of Arelon, the inhabitans of Elantris have been imprisoned within themselves, unable to die after the city's magic failed years ago. But when a new prince falls victim to the curse, he refuses to accept his fate.

One Minor Problem

I love the book and the story is great....I just wish that there was a pause in between chapters to let my mind gather all the information that just went down.

Got through it but

Having been through many of Sanderson series maybe I’ve grown too accustomed to certain things but this one seems pretty cliched by and large. Movie script type deus ex machina ending and that kind of stuff. Seems like he’s styling the heroine after Robert Jordan being an “assertive” woman. One of my least favorite, seems young and cheesy relying quite a bit on didactic/misplaced LDS doctrinal stylings.

Excellent Book!

I absolutely LOVED this book! The plot is deep and well written, with unexpected turns at every step!

Characters are all just stereotypes

It’s like he tried to fill every female character in a fantasy genre trope he could. And the attempts at social commentary are heavy handed. I really like the Stormlight Archive, but I quit this book after 10 because the characters were so annoying.

A good starting point for Sanderson

While it reads like a first draft of many characters we have seen come later (and better) it is still worth a read.

Attention Grabbing

Started off a little slow but once the story catches your interest, you don't want to put it down!

Loved it!

Picked this up after buying way of kings and figuring out about Sanderson's cosmere. Has some tropes that were commonplace in 2006 but it's a great read.

needed Micheal Kramer

struggled to follow not enough action. in the books defense, that's not what it set out to do so it's my own fault. this is a very good political drama but there just wasn't enough to draw me in. the disease that runs the narrative literally keeps people from fighting. didn't complete. probably will try again another time when I'm looking for this type of story.
