Once the godlike rulers of the capital of Arelon, the inhabitans of Elantris have been imprisoned within themselves, unable to die after the city's magic failed years ago. But when a new prince falls victim to the curse, he refuses to accept his fate.

Self revelation and mysticism

The book while interesting for a while seemed to get lengthy in what it needed to do and then just had all the characters take a sit down and drag on then abrupt climax and soft ending.
The book reminds me of the book Treason in the "unlimited power" if you figure out how to use it. I figure a good chunk of the book could have been cut out as this idea was thrown around so much it got repetitive.
I would honestly pass on this book and get something more engaging but I was suckered by the 5 star reviews and took a chance and was sadly finding elantris very lacking.

Let Casey Kasem read you a Brandon Sanderson novel

I have to admit, I only just started this audiobook, I'm in chapter 2. The story is captivating. Brandon Sanderson does his thing.

But wow...the narrator..imagine early 2000's Casey Kasem counting down the top 40....ways to get hurt in Elantris? Can't unhear it.

It's a great story so far, but maybe check out the dramatized version instead? I'm headed there now because I just can't finish this version without waiting for a pop song to start playing and I want to know what happens next.

Loved it!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this slow burn, character driven, political thriller with a wonderful dimension of magic - suspense, action, humour, mystery, intrigue and romance - what more could you possibly want?

Over stays its welcome

Struggled to finish. Different characters have same name. Extreme plot twist to move story. World building that invents confusion such as unique language, political and religious rules that only the author can grasp. Over explains topics way too many times while stretching character introspection to force the story to make since. Worst example is King as disinterested in daughter in law; his bad character is all her POv until surprise he is caught sacrificing a women naked in sewer. . . I found it odd and extreme.

Interesting

I’m a huge Brandon Sanderson fan and I’ve read all his other Cosmere books multiple times. I’ve tried to listen to this a couple times in the past but found it hard to get into. The beginning a kinda slow and I’m not a big fan of the narrator, but I’m glad I finally came back to it. It really picks up and now I’m hungry for more!

You can tell this was his first published book, but for a first it was pretty extraordinary!

If you’re on the fence, just get through the first 3rd of it and you’ll love it.

Wonderful!

I was already a fan of Sanderson, and this book did not disappoint! My favorite character was Raoden. The story was unique, and the narrator did an excellent job. This is one I will definitely be listening to again in the future.
