Critic reviews

"There is zombie fiction and then there is crawl-out-of-the-grave-and-drag-you-to-hell zombie fiction. Day by Day Armageddon is hands down the best zombie book I have ever read. Dawn of the Dead meets 28 Days Later doesn't even come close to describing how fantastic this thriller is. It is so real, so terrifying, and so well written that I slept with not one, but two loaded Glocks under my pillow for weeks afterwards. J. L. Bourne is the new king of hardcore zombie action!" (Brad Thor, New York Times #1 best-selling author)

Complete disappointment !

Completely disapointed! I thought I would listen to the details of the anticipated last battle, Armagedon but to find something else.. My above rating (the median chosen; so to have least effect) was made just to allow me to access writting these comments..

Great book that doesn't get too extreme.

Love the "journal-style" narrative of the book. It also has a good plot line that doesn't focus on the gore and disgust of zombies but progresses in a good manner.

Great story! Great Narrator! Buying collection

Better than thought it would be. The undead (zombies) actually seem possible in a real world situation.

Great Book, Bad Audio

The book is great I read this book when it first came out. It is in diary format and gives you the sense of stumbling onto something lost. I wanted to get the audiobook because I drive long distances a lot and loved this book so much I didn’t have time to reread it. Yet the person reading it makes the story feel super bland and uninteresting. I can’t help myself but losing interest throughout the book even though I know myself reading it, it’s good. I just wish the guy put more effort in the audio rather than being the monotone idrop redness commercials.

Not a bad listen but not 5 star worthy

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Would have like to see a more of a true survival situation that you would expect outside of just avoiding zombies. Never running out of food or ammunition and rarely cracking some skulls seemed a little odd.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jay Snyder?

He did a good job but his reading seemed way to dramatic for a zombie thriller. It took me a long time to get use to it. I couldn't stop picturing Derek Zoolander! Don't get me wrong Jay has a really great voice, but just not for these types of books. He seems more fitting for romantic stories or for stories like 50 Shades of Grey...Listen to the sample for yourself.

Any additional comments?

Decent book but there are much better variations out there that deserve higher ratings. If you liked this try Zombie Fallout (Tufo) and by far the best series; Adrian's Undead Diaries (Philbrook). Just be prepared to be sucked in for the long haul!

Compelling but a little too much Sci Fy for me

The third book got a little too Sy Fy for me. I realize some zombie tales could reasonably be called Sy Fy, but without giving too much away, it got a little too traditional Sy Fy for me. It does also seem that the author didn't outline his entire story prior to the publication of the first book due to some inconsistency in style and some very minor plot points established earlier on.

Despite that, I found it to be very compelling, well written and well narrated. These are you're traditional slow but unrelenting, "bullet to the head" undead zombies, but some of them become faster/smarter (like an animal not a human) than the majority of the walkers.

Always terrifying

Years ago I stumbled across a jewel. A rather Nondescript black bound book with an outline of an armed pilot on it. Stumbling in, I found the seeds of a truly chilling nightmare of a world gripped in the jaws of what we all fear. That copy was lost in Afghanistan. When I returned, I vowed to find it again. I did, a printing drawn in what looked like a worn field manual. This copy is my treasure. My kids found a new printing, this time as what you see before you. Now I am a proud owner of ALL of JL Bourne's writings, as well as the Audiobook versions. No matter where I am, I can always find a ticket into the world I hope to never set foot in. Lock your doors and turn it up. Well, maybe not too loud; the dead are near.

better than most zombie books, but not the best

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

well done as an audiobook

Would you recommend Day By Day Armageddon to your friends? Why or why not?

I'd recommend this to a friend who had already read all the BEST zombie books (The Remaining, Girl With All the Gifts, Station Eleven, Raising Stony Mayhall) and was desperate to keep reading in the genre. This doesn't even compare to DJ Molles' 'The Remaining' series...those are orders of magnitude better than these, although this author (Bourne) apparently used Molles' books as his model. Very similar storyline, but Molles did it sooooo much better. This one (Day by Day Armageddon) was overly dramatic, self-conscious, ridiculous...made me roll my eyes every few minutes. But still, much better than so many other books out right now (As the World Dies, Patient Zero, Feed,The Stand, I am Legend).

Have you listened to any of Jay Snyder’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

nope

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

i loved how the men protect and care for the dog

Fantastic.

If you could sum up Day By Day Armageddon in three words, what would they be?

SOLID. Inside the mind of a soldier in a very difficult situation. Do not listen read negative reviews. JUST GET IT. You'd might as well get both books right now.

What did you like best about this story?

So easy to relate to the thoughts and ideas of the characters. In my opinion, this is what a real person would feel and think in the event of such an apocalypse.

What about Jay Snyder’s performance did you like?

Can't really describe it but the performance is perfect. I hope this guy does the 3rd book also. Changing the reader would ruin it.

Any additional comments?

I cannot help but listen to these books over and over. Every person I have suggested these books to, has called in sick to work in order to finish them both. No matter what kind of stories you like... "these books are like crack". haha.
