Publisher's summary

Anna never knew werewolves existed until the night she survived a violent attack...and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she'd learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. But Anna is that rarest kind of werewolf: an Omega. And one of the most powerful werewolves in the country will recognize her value as a pack member—and as his mate.

Off to a good start, but.....

I really enjoyed the premise of this story. I also liked getting to know Charles and Bran better. I was very intrigued by these characters in the Mercy books.
However, I have a few points of contention. I found it got quite old listening to the constant mercurial inner dialogue from Anna. Yes, I understand she is a victim of sexual assault, I mean true brutality which is going to complicate her interpersonal relationships, but LITERALLY in a 5 minute period she extolled Charles's virtues, stated this man could never really love her because he was completely self-sufficient, and THEN stated how she could never live without his love...
C'MON MAN!
Her constant dissection of their relationship got pretty old pretty quick. One second they're having wild animalistic sex and then after it's over she won't even meet his eyes and thinks he doesn't love her. Knock it off already and just enjoy this man who loves you, treats you like a Queen, and truly sees you as his mate.
Ok, I'm off my soapbox. The narration was good, but I personally like the narrator for the Mercy stories better. I think she perfectly nails each character's "voice" and it really adds to the story.
I look forward to the next book and seeing how these characters evolve and learning more about this intriguing pack of wolves.

GREAT BOOK! Read 2 others first tho...

This book is great - but it's like a face that's had its nose cut off. Technically it stands alone but I highly recommend you read/listen to ALPHA & OMEGA with is about 2.5 hours that get this whole thing started. Really don't know why they are separate other than for marketing purposes. For that, I took a star, but the rest is great as usual.

You should already read the first Mercy Thompson book - you don't have to but you'll understand a lot more if you read both of these first. This is a spinoff that just happens to stand on its own.

I absolutely LOVE Holter Graham - the voice he does for Charles is perfect. Anna baffles everyone, me included - omega wolves are mysterious even to the reader and I find I don't mind that so much.

Briggs writes such a meaty story with a solid plot-line. The characters are well fleshed out, and where Mercy Thompson is a strong main character on her own and doesn't have to choose a man right away, Anna finds herself mated to an alpha werewolf in the Marrock's pack and we get to deal with the paranormal romance we lack int he MT books - and it's all handles very tastefully too boot.

Anna has been raped repeatedly by her last pack so she's a bit skittish but she's really drawn to Charles so watching their relationship grow is great. And a chance to get to hear more about Bran! (Which is why you should read the other books first so you can squee a bit...)

READ BOTH SERIES IN THIS ORDER: Moon Called (MT1), Alpha & Omega (novella), Cry Wolf (AO1), Hunting Ground (AO2), next five Mercy Thompson books (MT2-6), Fair Game (AO3), Frost Burned (MT7)

Briggs + Graham = Excellence

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Patricia Briggs writes a great story and Holter Graham just adds to it. The inflection, the expression brings her stories alive.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There isn't just one. Both Anna and Charles. His patience and strength. Her own strength and spunk that she finds.

Which scene was your favorite?

It's difficult to say a 'favorite scene' I found the story an emotional roller coaster. I find tears in my eyes and then I'd bark with laughter minutes later. Okay my favorite scene was when Anna reminded herself she didn't have to obey the witch and decked her.

Any additional comments?

As I said Briggs + Graham = Excellence. A great story can be lost with the wrong narrator. I think Holter Graham could make listening to the alphabet interesting. And I was reading Patricia Briggs books back when my eyes let me read. I'm looking forward to more.

Great Book, Pretty Good Narrator

The book is pretty a good, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. The narrator is one of the better narrators I have heard on audible so far.

Great Story.. But...

Any additional comments?

The story was awesome. I love that we got to hear all of the central characters perspectives. I am excited to see where this story goes. This was a book I wanted to listen to in one sitting. It was not the typical werewolf story. The only thing that annoyed me was Charles' voice, he sounds like Sylvester Stalone. It threw me off every time he spoke, I was transferred back to a scene in Rocky.

Alpha and Omega

I am glad I read the short story, Alpha and Omega before this. it made much more sense than jumping in here first.
My only real complaint is that the narrator should have been given the pronunciations of Bram's title based on the Mercy books. I kept correcting it in my head every time he said it.
Looking forward to book two.

Great Story

I loved this story. I have not read Briggs before. She tells a great story. Of course it could also be that Holter Graham is the narrator. I love most his voice.

good listen

This book was engaging and Holter did a great job - I love him as a narrator and actually chose this book based on him being the narrator.

The story was engaging and lively. The characters were well developed and I could see them ending up together. I'd recommend this audiobook.
