Publisher's summary

Cerise Mar and her unruly clan are cash poor but land rich, claiming a large swathe of the Mire, the Edge swamplands between the state of Louisiana and the Weird. When her parents vanish, her clan's long-time rivals are suspects number one.

But all is not as it seems. Two nations of the Weird are waging a cold war fought by feint and espionage, and their conflict is about to spill over into the Edge - and Cerise's life. William, a changeling soldier who left behind the politics of the Weird, has been forced back into service to track down a rival nation's spymaster.

When William's and Cerise's missions lead them to cross paths, sparks fly - but they'll have to work together if they want to succeed…and survive.

Spend some more time on The Edge.

At some point...

I loved these books when I read them in paper, and I e
Loved “reading” them again all these years later. All 4 books are clever and have strong female characters (which I care about). Romance or not they are great fantasy. My only comment would be these...and it may pertain to the genre, so I don’t want to single these books out...but I think if you removed the over explanation (what the Edge is, what Flash is, What a Blueblood is...) the books would be about 1/3 lighter.

That said! It’s not oppressive, the stories are to complex and interesting to feel like you are being treated as if you are an idiot.

I like these books enough to keep them and listen again. Even if Perfect William (or George) has to explain changelings, edge rats or The Hand a couple of extra times. 🤟🏻

Very good story :D

4 stars

This is a reread for me...I wasn't on Goodreads when I first read it so I never reviewed it but it's still a very good story. I actually read this series before I read any of Ilona's other work. There are a few references to things that took place in the first book but I don't see an issue with this being read as a standalone.

This story takes place around 2 years after book #1, [book:On the Edge|6329547]. Since then, William hasn't had much going for him and he's been living in the Broken, playing with his action figures and enjoying beer and other Broken benefits. William is contacted by some people from the Weird that are part of a spy group called The Mirror. The Mirror is trying to keep a discovery away from a rival agency called The Hand that is from another country within the Weird. William isn't too hot on the idea but he's prompted to take part because of the involvement of a foe named Spider, who William has fought in the past and has good reason for hating. William heads to "The Mire" which is part of the Edge that's all swamp lands.

When William gets to the Mire, he meets Cerise in disguise and they find a common purpose that eventually leads them to team up. When William sees Cerise out of her disguise, he also finds that he wants to partner up with Cerise for more than just his mission. Cerise was born in the Mire and she's currently in trouble because her family has something the Mirror wants. Her parents are missing and that has put the fate of Cerise's whole family (and it's a big one) on her shoulders. She knows it's not a good time for a relationship but as Cerise and William team up to fight the Mirror, they get closer and closer. There's a lot of danger and a good amount of drama as well but in the end, the situation is dealt with and William and Cerise are together and headed towards a HEA.

This was a very enjoyable story. I really like both Cerise and William and thought they made a good couple. The story was very good and engaging and the characters are great (both the main characters and secondary) so I'd recommend it. :D

Jam packed action...

Yes, this was one of my top favorite reads of 2010! I absolutely love this writing team! I love this series, and the idea of the Edge, the space between Broken (the unmagical world) and the Weird (where all things magical reside, a series which the publisher almost didn't pick up because they didn't know how to classify it! A series that Ilona has called a Twinkie, because everyone loves them, but nobody knows what's inside! A series for which Gordon, her husband coined the term "Rustic fantasy".  The publisher finally took a chance, and we, the readers made out like bandits because we got an awesome 4 volume series!
"Re-reading" it this time as an audio book was a special treat because Renee Raudman is one of my favorite narrators, and she absolutely didn't disappoint me here!
Characters William and Cerise adventure is jam packed with action! William is haunted by his past, uncertain of his future, and he's at odds with Cerise, a woman he desires/needs. But all Cerise wants to do is save her family.  Grab this audiobook and hear what happens! Oh and yes you can listen to it as a stand-alone, but I betcha you can't listen to just one!   LOL

Fun and Fascinating Back Story

I team thoroughly enjoying this series. Some reviewers claim this is unrelated. I guess it is in some ways. However, the first two books of this series introduces us to the 4 kids who end up part of the Inn Keeper Chronicles. It's fun and engaging. These are unique concepts. I wasn't able to put this one down.

Wonderful Story

I really enjoyed hearing more about William, whom we met in On the Edge. It was an entertaining story and wonderful narration by Renee Raudman.

William Gets The Gal He Deserves!

First off, I loved William's character in the first book of the series, On the Edge, and as much as I enjoyed that book - in fact I think it was a phenom listen - I was rooting more for William than Declan to be the romantic lead. Cherise is definitely a better match for him than Rose, the heroine from On the Edge.

My main reason for rating this one lower than I rated On the Edge is the introduction of a spy thriller theme. It just didn't suit my tastes as well as the first novel's more "Questing Hero" theme. Also, William didn't have as much opportunity to break out the uber bad ass blasé that got me rooting for him in the first novel, though he did have ample opportunity to do bad things to very bad people.

Very much worth the listen!

The Cajun Caper of Lord Leather Pants & Lady Hobo

An excellent second installment featuring the last book’s romance runner up. The book begins with William’s “who could love a beast” pity party and it was a minor annoyance that some of that continued throughout. Cerise was a good match with her “who could love a poor Edger” pity party. Luckily the duo spend far more time fighting danger and each other, because that’s where the entertainment was.
The swampy bayou island of Dr. Moreau mystery caper was wonderfully creepy.

This features the crazy menagerie of the Mar clan. One of the things I love about this author duo is their willingness to sacrifice supporting characters, This is UF romance, so you know the H/h will survive.
But, there’s real emotion and suspense when you listen knowing that just about anyone else could die (book 5 in Kate Daniels series, oh, my heart!).

For all its length, I was disappointed how little time was spent with the other characters from the first book. I prefer the duo’s Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy series because the characters (especially family and extended family) continue into each subsequent book, adding layers of meaning to solid stories.
Still, there’s enough overlap with book 1 that I’m glad I didn’t take these out of order.
And, this is yet another book proving why this author duo is among my favorites.

More exciting than The Edge!

I loved the first book in this series, The Edge. This one is very similar in the whole begrudging love plot, but the villains are more interesting and the action is a bit more exciting. I really enjoyed it, even if it was a little bit predictable. The narration could've been better.

Book 2

Liam’s story is exciting, adventurous, heart wrenching and warming, and hot! Adventure cravers will like this story a lot! Great world and character building along with an awesome storyline and plot! Ms. Raudman did a fantastic job narrating as always!
