Confused Military Ranks & Addresses

Captain Roberts passed command to Ensign Nathan Scott. Scott pinned the bloody captain bars to his lapel. Say what? The Aurora was something of a carrier/destroyer class ship. I thought navy captains were equal to bird colonel's in the Air Force and Army, wearing silver eagles, not double bars. That bothered me even 6 books later. I was also bothered by Brown's insistent use of full formal titles followed by the last names of the personnel. Commanders and Lt. commanders are directly addressed as "Commander." Hearing Master Chief So-and-so and Senior Chief So-and-so drove me nuts. I don't know how naval personnel handle their rank addresses, but in the Air Force, a chief master sergeant is referred to or addressed as Sergeant So-and-so, or as Sarge. Lieutenant colonels are address as Colonel So-and-so. Brown became obsessed with addressing personnel by their full rank designation later in the series.

So much for my picayune beef about Brown's laboring over rank. The story was entertaining otherwise and kept my interest. I'm beginning book 7 in the series.

Very good book

I read a lot of the reviews negative and positive. Once through as much as I could handle I found a common theme with the negative reviews. Now I have watched, read, listen to science fiction since I was 5 or 6. To me it seems people forget everything is inspired by something that came before.
I heard everyone comparing this series or 1st book to Star Trek Voyager( I grew up watching reruns of the original Star Trek) and I see the comparison the voyager series was inspired by Space 1999 and Battlestar Galactica.
I refrain from saying words like taken or stolen because I do not see it in this writing. I see the author writing and diverse plot with well thought out characters. I enjoyed this 1st book greatly and am looking forward to the second. Anyway my two cents on the book. Probably not worth anything to anyone but me. Thought I would share it anyway.
Have a great day and enjoy.

this is an awesome story line with many many unfolding storylines.
wish it would have become a tv series.
some times It gets a little far fetched but it's a great space drama.

some of the best.

Have owned this set for several years. Ryk Brown is a true modern master. Jeffery Kafer is the best narrator working today. I go back to this series at least once a year.

Mediocre effort by narrator, interesting story

The voice actor / narrator could have done a better job at research and training for a book which emphasizes various accents and broken English.
The story is clearly only a beginning of a series, and it really doesn't stand on its own any more than an episode of a soap opera. The ending was very abrupt, but if the quality of the story is consistent, I will listen to the whole series.

pretty good pulp sci-fi

Second listen. It gets much better later in the series. The first book is a bit rough in presentation and in content. But I still enjoyed it.

A good adventure story in a sci fi setting

Not about technology and it's relationship to society, despite the impression the first chapters might give you. At its heart a fun adventure story that takes place on a spaceship. Will be listening to the next one.

Two complaints: The pacing later in the book gets kind of repetitive. Book would have benefitted from switching it up a bit. Also it ends abruptly without a lot of feeling of closure.

Meh military space opera

It’s ok, not a bad listen if you get it free on Audible Plus but I wouldn’t pay for it. The plot at the end takes a turn that I’m not a fan of. I like big space battles but this probably won’t give me that. It’s nice to see the author try something new in this genre but it wasn’t for me

Laguage barrier

Good story until it was overwhelmed by cussing. Bleh. Not for me. When you can't listen with kids in the car, it's a sign.
