Publisher's summary

For generations, the dragonriders had dedicated their lives to fighting Thread, the dreaded spores that periodically rained from the sky to ravage the land. On the backs of their magnificent telepathic dragons they flew to flame the deadly stuff out of the air before it could reach the planet's surface.

But the greatest dream of the dragonriders was to find a way to eradicate Thread completely, so that never again would their beloved Pern be threatened with destruction.

Now, for the first time, it looks as if that dream can come true. For when the people of Pern, led by Masterharper Robinton and F'lar and Lessa, Weyr-leader and Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr, excavate the ancient remains of the planet's original settlement, they uncover the colonists' voice-activated artificial intelligence system - which still functions. And the computer has incredible news for them: There is a chance - a good chance - that they can, at long last, annihilate Thread once and for all.

Pay another visit to Pern.

All the Weyrs of Pern

The leaders of Pern discover technology from their ancestors that landed and made Pern their home. Finding the landing site has given them access to a computer with a ton of knowledge. They learn new ways of doing things and above all, they are on their way to becoming thread free in the future.

It is interesting to see how everyone on Pern reacts to the new unearthed computer. Some embrace the new ways of thinking and doing things. Others think of this as an evil abomination and do everything they can to get rid of it. This book focuses on the struggles within the society, the enhancements that come out of learning such new and inventive things and doing what they can to move the red planet so that thread will not fall in Pern's future.

Very enjoyable with an extremely sad ending that had me crying. I've become very attached to these characters. I'm almost to the end with only two more to go to finish this series reading them in chronological order. This was a fantastic addition to the series.

Anne's dragons and riders are INCREDIBLE

Still don't enjoy "tinny" "echo" of dragon voice... but I could ignore for the most part

The Best of all until now

This book has been the best of all until now. Sad for its ending though. Narration is decent. Can't hardly wait to start the next one. I love the world of PERN. I'm so glad that there are many, many more in this series.

Just as I remembered!

I've read this book many years ago as a teenager, and it was a thrill to be able to revisit so many years later! I found some of Foster's voices to be lackluster, mostly Lessa's but then again, I had become accustomed to Dick Hill's readings that this may be biased.

Still a great story of how a society regains all of its lost heritage and knowledge to the point where they can advance themselves and have a higher standard of living!

Oddly Prescient

I'm re-reading the Pern series in 2020-2021. I find some of the themes in the books being played out before my eyes. Moreta had the pandemic and this book had the ill-conceived notion of preserving the "purity" of a culture at all costs. But I suppose I'm finding similarities between the actions and reactions in the books and in real life because that is just how some humans will react to a certain stimulus.

Fortunately, the leaders and the majority of the population of Pern rejected those that fear change and the unknown. And they accomplished the unimaginable. Mrs. McCaffrey delivered each character with such depth that one can and connect, cheer, and cry with equal passion. She adeptly weaved all the various storylines and characters while delivering some fascinating dialog between the humans and AIVAS. Despite having been written 30 years ago (!), it still resonates with our current time.

Mr. Foster's performance imbued new life into a book already jumping off the pages. I'd gladly recommend reading or listening to this book.

All the Weyrs

A fitting ending to the Pern saga (even though more are written). It made me tear up at the end but it was appropriate.
