Publisher's summary

The second book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

Wherever the historians go, chaos is sure to follow....

Dispatched to Victorian London to seek out Jack the Ripper, things go badly wrong when he finds the St Mary's historians first. Stalked through the fog-shrouded streets of Whitechapel, Max is soon running for her life. Again.

And that's just the start. Max finds herself in a race against time when an old enemy is intent on destroying St Mary's. An enemy willing, if necessary, to destroy History itself.

From the Hanging Gardens of Nineveh to the murder of Thomas a Becket, via an unscheduled dodo rescue mission, join the historians of St Mary's as they hurtle around History on more hilarious, hair-raising escapades.

What a way to learn about history

Although this series is adventurous and thrilling, it also has a great way of learning about the past and how all the major players created our present. The best part of this series are the characters that are serious about what they do, but also have great fun pursuing whatever they are doing.

A thoroughly enjoyable listen

I love this whole series, every character has their own endearing quirks and the narrator does a beautiful job of bringing them to life. The little bits of subtle humour just add to your pleasure, like when you're eating a really great banana bread and you come upon a bite with toasted walnut in it. Highly recommended!

Grockle

Everyone should hear Zara make that bird sound at least once in their life. Personally, I've backed up and replayed it a few times. I enjoy this book more than the first.

Liked - but trigger warning

***spoiler***Just want to put warning that if you have any type of sexual trauma it starts in beginning with Jack the Ripper. Not in detail but it is a little scary plus knowing his history made it a difficult listen. However, the spirit/ghost does get destroyed after they have dreams and helped me continue on. Rape is also mentioned in the last chapters in reference to the Queen. I still enjoyed the book, I love the concept.

Excellent!

What a delightful story & interesting take on historical fact/fiction. The author styling reminds me of Connie Willis. Yet, they are have taken a more descriptive & complete turn on each story. I need to see who came first. The narrator is easy an easy listen. Her sing song voice presents itself where needed and keeps the story moving at a great pace. I am three books in and can see completing the set. There are many funny turns, delightful characters and are light hearted in nature. Very worth it!

Absorbing, Clever, Witty, and Charming!

I am a student of history, I love sarcasm and a sharp and witty dialogue. This series is absolutely perfect for me! The characters are just quirky enough without going overboard, and the history is spot on! The challenges of traveling through time as an historian are intricate and you just really have to keep going to find out what happens next! Do try the first one! You will be hooked!

love the St Mary's books

I love the St Mary's chronicles, I've read a few books now and some of the short stories. it's exciting and interesting and a comfortable read. I especially love the narration, just amazing and personal and a joy to listen to.

I have only one complaint. Max's character handles emotional moments like a juvenile. I hope that there are no teenagers reading this out there who think that bending the truth, avoidance and the silent treatment, and explosive anger are healthy ways to manage relationships.

other than that, can't wait to read more :)

Then this will be...ahem...just your cup of tea.

Well written and beautifully narrated. Thoroughly entertaining, exciting, and funny. You'll want to be an historian with St. Mary's when you grow up.

Trying to Wait Patiently for the Next One !!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved the twist on time travel and the eccentricities of St. Mary's. But probably the most remarkable is that the heroine is not hour glass shaped and has to work at being fit - as most of us do. She gets messy, panicked, makes mistakes and feels occasionally hopeless as we all do. But -- she has the chance to fix it. Give this series a listen to - or two... very entertaining as well as addicting!
