Publisher's summary

D'Anne Burwell's smart, athletic son - raised in a loving and prosperous home - begins abusing OxyContin as a teenager, and within a year drops out of college, walks out of rehab, and lands homeless on the streets of Boulder. Struggling with fear, guilt, and a desperate need to protect her son, D'Anne grapples with her husband's anger and her daughter's depression as the family disease of addiction impacts them all. She discovers the terrifying links between prescription-drug abuse and skyrocketing heroin use. And she comes to understand that to save her child she must step back and allow him to fight for his own soul.

Saving Jake gives voice to the devastation shared by the families of addicts, and provides vital hope. Above all, it is a powerful personal story of love and redemption.

Raw perspective of a parent

This story was a powerful, real story of how difficult it can be to not know what is happening with your child but still know they are slipping away. I appreciated her effort to change some of her behaviors and will be putting some of those into practice myself.

Always enjoy an addiction genre book

A great view from close family of how addiction ravages almost all it touches - and how the journey of recovery also can touch those near and dear to an addict

This is a phenomenal drug story!

The perspectives of addicts' parents and siblings are explored. Jake was coddled and spoiled by his well-heeled parents. (Expect white privilege to abound during this tale.)

Great story about family and addiction

She does a wonderful job of relating their personal journey of addiction through the eyes of the family. Addiction is a family disease. Also I love that she added the challenges of negotiating a broken insurance system that does nothing but force clients to get worse and hope they make it back for another chance. It’s pathetic.

Courageous mother

I am so impressed by this mother. I certainly hope this son knows how fortunate he is to have a mother with such compassion and whole-hearted genius LOVE. This type of mother is often not the case for so many recovering addicts. A mom like this making the addict feel so cared for by doing her own recovery in Alanon is not every recovery addicts experience as they struggle to reach and maintain the credibly challenging journey of recovery. For those of you with moms like this one in this book, she needs to be at the top of your gratitude list every night before you go to bed. God bless the mothers that go all in and learn everything they possibly can to best help their child and help themselves. This woman represents true motherly love!
