Publisher's summary

Salem Wiley is a genius cryptanalyst, courted by the world's top security agencies ever since her quantum computing breakthrough. She's also an agoraphobe shackled to a narrow routine since her father's suicide. When her intelligence work unexpectedly exposes a sinister plot to assassinate the country's first viable female presidential candidate, Salem finds herself both target and detective in a modern day witch hunt.

Drawn into a labyrinth of messages encrypted by Emily Dickinson and codes tucked inside the Beale Cipher a hundred years earlier, Salem begins to uncover the truth: an ancient and ruthless group is hell-bent on ruling the world, and only a select group of women stands in its way.

All-around excellent!

Strong characters, strong plot and good attention to descriptive detail relative to historical characters and even technical tasks. Great performance also!

Good enough

The narrator was great, did a good job with the different characters and set the tone for each scene. Interesting story, good suspense and drama. A few times it felt a little slowed down, thus my 4 stars. The story felt timely with many themes I relate to.

great listen

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the historical references. It should have been more detailed and made into a series. I would have loved to keep listening

Non-stop action

This book is quite different from most of Jess Lourey’s work. It follows two women as they search for clues to an ancient truth that will undermine an evil centuries-old group. The storytelling is as exceptional as you’d expect from this author, and the plot is suspenseful with non-stop action. I both read an ebook and listened to the audiobook, which was nicely performed. I enjoyed both versions and am looking forward to reading Mercy’s Chase.

Good but not great

Story is ok. Narrator has to do a lot of voices and accents and deserves a lot of credit. The main characters are a bit pathetic.

Not her best

This was just ok. I've listened to, and enjoyed, several of her other novels, so hopefully this is just a one off. The antagonists were written as to be indistinguishable from one another, making it difficult to follow at times. I did not enjoy the narration. The 2 main characters are from Minnesota but, for some reason, they were voiced with a mild southern accent.

This book was surprising and not what expected based on the title. It was surprisingly suspenseful.
