Publisher's summary

Enemies emerge everywhere. Stagnation starts seeming standard. Results require Ruthlessness.

Joe has been moving deeper into his study of ritual magic and further away from his combat team. He's learning more and more, but more often than not needs to choose between his research and squad leadership. Improving the town is a huge help to the guild, and they have been pushing to increase their power.

Their rapid increases have not gone unnoticed. The guild receives an ultimatum, delivered by assassins and signed with blood. If they continue to accrue power and fame, each and every person with a grievance against the guild will come to smash the town back to square one.

With tensions coming to a head, all Joe wants to do is leave it all behind and reach the next area. He flatly refuses the guild when they ask him to devise lethal options to use against the gathering army, but when the time comes...even Joe is unsure if he'll step into the limelight and show everyone exactly how ruthless he can be.

been waiting for this book for a while.

This one was great. Still can't get over the voice changes from the previous narrator being changed to what they are now, but it was still good. I'm glad the author finally came back to the main story as I didn't find the side stories appealing. If you're a fan of the series, you won't be disappointed but if you're new to the series then alot of subtle hints will go over your head and you most likely won't like it because its confusing to you. Would definitely recommend and will be listening to it again for any information I might have missed.

My only gripe that isnt really a gripe, is that in classic Dakota fashion I find my self so frustrated going from chapter to chapter because he leaves just that little bit of suspense in the more high anxiety places that make you want to both return the book and skip ahead to the next chapter to see what happens. Only to leave you at the end of the book wanting to listen to the next one immediately.

Thanks Dakota, keep em coming.

Not at all bad, but probably my least favorite

While I am a fan of the writers puns and humor, the joke execution in this one seemed off.

A few out of nowhere plot points disconnected me a little and this one kinda feels like the writer is sacrificing the world and everyone else to develop Joe more but he's not actually changing.

Still a great series, read, and listen that keeps me interested.

Please sir, may I have some more?

good read

this was a good read with a great narrorator. Alot of people seemed to think the main character was pushed against too much. I believe it was more to force character development and keep the story from stagnating.

Just what you would expect

Book five covers a lot of action between characters and guilds, but I miss the steady and unpredictable leveling by the MC. If you're a fan, this is more of what you love with a big setup for a potentially new world to explore!

3 stars for the narration including many mispronunciations. Unfortunately, one of those is close to every fifth word towards the middle of the book coming up every time the narrator tries to pronounce hover. Not a reason to pass on the book, but an amount of effort in editing or coaching is necessary before narrating the next story.

Right up my alley.

Silly, funny, disturbing, enjoyable. I think I am a genuine Dakoda fan. I have been looking forward to this book since the last book ended and even more when I saw it was coming soon. High expectations and they were met including the cringeworthy end.

Great ending so far

The story thus far was closed out with a clean finish with enough to keep you wondering about the next. Luke Daniels cracked me up at the end when he did some of his bloopers as he was reading the story for us and I was laughing. Must listen at the very end.

Blooper Reel, more stories need this...

I have near 500 audiobooks and this is the first with a BLOOPER REEL at the end, loved it! ... MORE PLEASE ... The story was pretty epic as well. Go listen.
Still miss Vikas’ narration of Joe but without Luke, the character Jackson would not be the Best Character Ever!

🤷‍♂️

I loved it overall, and am excited to see where it goes and how it gets there. Was much less excited about the voice work, as it seemed rather garbled, chaotic, and undefined for a good long while but 🤷‍♂️ I appreciate the work and the effort all the same.
