Publisher's summary

In her now classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon told the story of Claire Randall, an English ex-combat nurse who walks through a stone circle in the Scottish Highlands in 1946, and disappears… into 1743. The story unfolded from there in seven best-selling novels, and CNN has called it "a grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries]." Now the story continues in Written in My Own Heart's Blood.

It is 1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington's troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife; his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is; and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie's wife, Claire, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces.

The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in 20th-century Scotland. Or not. In fact, Brianna is searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family's secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy - never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself.

Written in My Own Heart's Blood is the brilliant next chapter in a masterpiece of the imagination unlike any other.

Featured Article: The Best Women Narrators to Listen to Right Now

One of the biggest questions listeners have when it comes to approaching a new audiobook is whether or not they'll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable, as audiobooks are at least a few hours long (with many clocking in at 20 hours long—or more!), and sticking with one person's voice for that time period can feel like a big commitment. We rounded up some of the best female narrators with a robust list of audiobooks under their belts.

Best book!

I really enjoyed Diana’s use of historical events in the Revolutionary war. We got to see more of George Washington and learn bits and pieces of pivotal battles that occurred during that time. I’m also sad about the deaths... but in the end we got Brianna back!

phenomenon as only Diana can write!

This book was as good as all the others in the series. I love the author and how in touch she is with the characters. I also love the narrator and her enthusiasm for her read.

Good balance b/w characters & history.

If you could sum up Written in My Own Heart's Blood in three words, what would they be?

Finally "some sense" of closure for so many of her characters/storylines

What did you like best about this story?

In my opinion, this particular book in the series seems to be more character driven. I usually skip most of the middle of her stories, Not this story, I listened to almost every word of the audio.<

The last quarter and the ending wwere my favorite parts of the whole story.

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I think Davina Porter is the perfect narrator for this stories.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but not physically possible....40 hours is a really long time!

Any additional comments?

Regarding language and sexual content, I think it appropriate to the characters and setting of the story. Except for the original story in the series, this is my favorite! Looking foward to the next in the series...three years from now, with any luck!

Drags a bit

More words than I thought necessary less artfully put together than in other work & there wasn't much suspense or surprise. Getting repetitious.

The bloodiest love story I've ever read.

The narrator is perfect. I loved this book just as much as the others. I can't wait for book 9.

That's It?

I had no idea this was not the end, and that a ninth book is in the works. I was concerned about how quickly story lines were coming together. I still enjoy these books completely. Davina Porter still has serious issues with American Accents especially African Americans. I binged on the whole series.
