Determined to fulfill her late husband's dream, Rachel Boyd struggles to keep her ranch afloat with the help of her two young sons. But some days it feels as though her every effort is sabotaged. When faced with a loss she cannot afford, she's forced to trust Rand Brookston, the one man in Timber Ridge she wishes to avoid. And with good reason. He's a physician, just like her father, which tells her everything she needs to know about him. Or so she thinks.... Dr. Rand Brookston ventured west with the dream of bringing modern medicine to the wilds of the Colorado Rockies, but the townspeople have been slow to trust him. Just as slow in coming is Rand's dream to build the town a proper clinic. When a patient's life is threatened, Rand makes a choice - one that sends ripples through the town of Timber Ridge. And through Rachel Boyd's stubborn heart.

I listened to this as an Audible.com download. I have a Platinum membership. Wow, what a book! The narrator was perfect for this book. She really could not have done the heroine any more justice and she did great with the hero, the heroine’s sons, and the minor characters. No easy feat!
The prologue sets up a spooky mystery that leaves a question hanging in the air – who is the dead man? It is not until you are about a third to halfway through the book when the prologue begins to make sense. I have never read a Tamara Alexander book before. Something she does that I don’t see as often as I would like, is weaving other subplot threads through her story. This is something I do, too, in my own writing but I see far too many books with a simple straight forward plot and little additional subplots or threads and themes. She tied them up beautifully at the end, too, which I always appreciate.
The heroine is a widower with two sons and is having a tough go of things. Her father was a physician and she served as a medical practitioner until the new physician came to town. It is cute how it is clear right from the beginning that the doctor has fallen for the pretty widow but she still hasn’t recovered from the loss of her husband, who died several years earlier.
Great listen, I will probably listen to this again now that I realize what the prologue was all about. I highly recommend this Tamara Alexander book to anyone who enjoys Christian historical romance. Brava, Tamera, both for the story and for the craft in writing!
Loved the series. Each novel is a stand alone. But since you get to know all the characters its nice when they return.
Very captivating plot and characters are so alive with emotion and fears. Excellent story. Wonderful message. Love this author's storytelling and faith-based novels.
Safety on a pistol in the 1870s? Rubbing alcohol a common household item? These distractions were annoying, especially since the storyline and characters are written as though a very young girl wrote the book. Not recommended.
Rachel Boyd is still healing after losing her husband in a terrible accident a year ago and now trying to raise 2 boys on her own and keep the ranch she and her husband wanted to build for their boys. She is too delicate to allow anyone else to enter her heart again, as she and her husband were best friends and very much in love. It will take a very special person to help her see she can have a second chance to share her life with someone.
Rand Brookston is a respectable doctor in this growing Colorado town, single, occasionally needing an assistant. Enter, Rachel Boyd who assisted her own father who was a doctor and see the sparks fly...
Uh-oh, wrong kind of sparks right at first. Lets see him break the ice. At the same time, the six novels altogether that Tamara Alexander wrote on the Colorado territory are intertwined with the stories of these two, with other characters in the book.
I love the way TA does this. Her stories are written in such a fashion so you can get wrapped up in each story and finish the book if you can't continue, but at the same time, you can pick up another one and continue another of the books to find out just how another piece of the puzzle fit from the previous novel. Very interesting indeed!
I love this story line. I love the author.I love the characters
Rachel. She is a strong woman who wins over adversity.
This narrator did an ok job, but the hissing sound she makes when she says ''s" is VERY annoying!
Strengthened my Soul
The realization of knowing that the giving of your heart to another when you have experienced the sorrow of losing a loved one... is worth the risk of experiencing sorrow again as the joys of loving someone give more purpose and meaning to life.
I have not. But Robin Mile's as a narrator...she is extraordinary! I will seek out more books with her as the narrator!
Yes...but having a book to read..even for just minutes at a time..and to look forward to when time avails itself to me...I find most therapeutic!
I am very impressed and touched by the spiritual depth and intuitiveness Tamera Alexander imparts in her writings!
