Publisher's summary

Relationships are challenging enough for most single, over-30 women. For level-10 parasensitive Clare Lancaster, they're a minefield. The elite few who know her secret call her a human lie detector, and any falsehood, no matter how subtle or well hidden, sets her blood racing.

Over the years, Clare has come to accept that someone with her extraordinary talents is unlikely to find a suitable mate. And she's even resigned herself to the fact that everyone, to one degree or another, hides behind a façade - including her recently deceased brother-in-law.

When Clare finds the body of Brad McAllister, the golden child of Stone Canyon, Arizona, the posh residents turn a suspicious eye in her direction. As Archer Glazebrook's daughter, Clare is shielded from the law, but not the gossip. It seems that meeting the half sister and family she did not know until seven months ago was a mistake. Now her father summons her from California to play a role in his business empire, and Clare doesn't intend on making the same mistake twice.

But after meeting Jake Salter, Archer's "business consultant", she is convinced that things aren't what they seem. Salter's careful conversation walks a delicate line between truth and deception, revealing and resisting. Something sparks and sizzles between them - something more than the usual electricity between a man and a woman.

Caught in a dizzying storm of secrets, lies, and half-truths, Jake and Clare will plunge into an investigation that demands every bit of their special gifts. Together, they must overcome their mutual distrust in order to unravel a web of conspiracy and murder.

Critic reviews

"Krentz delivers another evocative romance, complete with engaging dialogue and explicit sex scenes, but the real meat of the plot concerns the sleuthing: that a charismatic alpha male finally meets his mate is icing on another densely plotted Krentz confection." ( Publishers Weekly)

this was a great book

this was a great book although the dialogue in the beginning of the book seemed too fast.

I'm a big Krentz/Quick/Castle fan.

Loved this book! Fast paced enough to keep interest and the paranormal angle is always à plus.

One of her best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What made the experience of listening to White Lies the most enjoyable?

This is a terrific story as usual for JAK. The romance is hot, the characters are interesting, and the story line is fascinating. I have read this novel many times and now I have repeatedly listened to the audio version. Every time I hear/read this I find something new to enjoy. Thanks JAK for a wonderful experience.

What does David Colacci and Kathy Garver bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It was fun to hear the sexy flirting between Colacci and Garver.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

White lies and promises.

duet

I absolutely love when they have a male reading the male characters and a female reading the female characters! to me it just elevates the story.

Loved story but ...

Loved story and male narrator but the female narrator wasn’t very good. Sounded like she kept running out of breath when reading and not good at switching between female characters.

Better the second time around

This was one of my first Krentz listens and I did lots of eye-rolls the first time I heard it for the two-dimensional characters, stiff and unbelievable plot, and things being just too convenient. I really enjoyed David Colacci's voice and the way he handled his character. Kathy Garver, while absolutely spot-on as far as technique goes, sounded, to my ears, definitely 'too'; too young, too bouncy, too sweet and naive for a woman who knew every time she heard a lie.
On second listen, going into it knowing what to expect (and what not to) I enjoyed it a whole lot more. I still didn't find Ms Garver best-cast for this book, but the whole thing came together much better.
Still, it is what it is, and if you've read Ms Krentz before, you know exactly what to expect; as do I now No regrets for the credit used.

Good book, but not fond of dual narration.

I really enjoy the Arcane Society books quite a lot and read them over again as much as once a year. The story line is very enjoyable to me.

That said, I have always hated more than one narrator. While this is edited better than most, it still can be jarring going from one to another. Or maybe it's just that I just flat out don't like Kathy Garver as a narrator.

Delightful characterization

If you like the contemporary Arcane Society novels, expect a treat. Kathy Garver's characterization of heroine Claire is a special delight.
