Publisher's summary

Four years ago... Skye Kellerman was attacked in her own bed. She managed to fend off her knife-wielding assailant, but the trauma changed everything about her life. As a result of that night, she joined two friends - also survivors - in starting The Last Stand, an organization to help victims of crime. But now... Her would-be rapist is getting out of prison. Skye knows that Dr. Oliver Burke hasn't forgotten that her testimony cost him his reputation - and his freedom. Sacramento detective David Willis, who investigated her case, believes Burke is a clear and present danger - and guilty of at least two unsolved murders. And now Burke is free to terrorize Skye again. Unless David can stop him. Unless Skye can fight back. Because Oliver Burke has every intention of finishing what he started. And that's a promise. Trust me.

Good book, but...

The book itself has been wonderful. I'm a Brenda Novak fan. My only "complaint" is that the editing is a little odd. You'll be listening along, the chapter will end and at about the same time the last word of the chapter is spoken the number of the next chapter is said...almost simultaneously. It's weird. Other than that, I'd recommend the book!!

Ehhhhhh

I want to start off by saying, I listened to Brenda Novak's Evelyn Talbot Series (anxiously awaiting the next one!) and LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
When I started looking for new listens, I started by looking at the authors I'd previously listened to and enjoyed - and I ALWAYS look for new series whether I'm reading or listening, because I hate having to end a story when I love the characters!
I noticed this series by Novak (beginning with "Trust Me") seemed like it would fit my interests: a little mystery, a little thriller, a little romance.

It did include those things...but the story was...not great.

Firstly, it seemed like there were constantly references to things I was supposed to know, but didn't. It made me question whether this was truly the first story in the series.

Second, the idea that a woman would wait FOUR YEARS for a guy, (when there had been zero actual dates or anything with aforementioned guy) without even entertaining the idea of dating others or moving on is preposterous.
I didn't like the fact that Skye kept giving David chances, and I REALLY didn't like that he was constantly leading her on and then going back to his ex!
Skye was supposed to be this woman who had overcome! She was strong! She wasn't going to let anyone make her a victim again!
So WHY would she do this back and forth with someone who treated her that way for FOUR YEARS??
It made him seem real wishy-washy too. If you're going to try and paint a guy as a protective alpha male, you should paint him as knowing what he wants, and doing whatever he has to in order to get it. My two cents anyway.

I wish I could recommend this book, because I've seen Brenda Novak's talent and creativity in a previous read, but I just can't. I actually made it through the whole thing, hoping and hoping something would happen to redeem it, but no.
I won't be continuing on with the series.

Sadly, this series was the reason I decided to take a chance on the Romance package. I've got some time before I decide whether to keep it, but this was not a great indicator in the quality of the package, in my opinion.

Standing Ovation

Excellent book! Well written with strong characters. This was not intended to be a mystery but Ms. Novak developed the bad guy very well and kept my interest all the way. I would have liked a more dramatic ending to him but it worked. The narration was perfect.

loved it but a little disappointed..

Although i love the book, I was a little disappointed in the lack of romance between the hero and the heroine..I think it could've been a little more developed.

wish they'd used a different narrator for this

the narrator for this story is okay when she's just reading. When she tries to do voices for the characters, it's awful and makes the story very hard to listen to. I don't know why she makes so many of the women sound like puppets from a children's show, but it kind of ruins the story. I might listen to another book from this author, but I will now avoid this narrator.

Good story, terrible narration

This is a typical Brenda Novak book - a good, quick read. However, the narrator is dreadful. She makes men sound like high-pitched women, and doesn’t change voices between characters, making it hard to follow. Read this one as an actual book.

Editing repeatedly messed up.

When the narrator announced the chapters, it was WAY too close to the end of the last sentence. Several times they even cut off the last word. This was a big and irritating mistake by editing and/or production that could have and should have not happened at all.
