Publisher's summary

Once a respected member of the Sorcerer Council and now an outcast, Blaise has spent the last year of his life working on a special magical object. The goal is to allow anyone to do magic, not just the sorcerer elite. The outcome of his quest is unlike anything he could've ever imagined - because, instead of an object, he creates Her.

She is Gala, and she is anything but inanimate. Born in the Spell Realm, she is beautiful and highly intelligent - and nobody knows what she's capable of. She will do anything to experience the world...even leave the man she is beginning to fall for.

Augusta, a powerful sorceress and Blaise's former fiance, sees Blaise's deed as the ultimate hubris and Gala as an abomination that must be destroyed. In her quest to save the human race, Augusta will forge new alliances, becoming tangled in a web of intrigue that stretches further than any of them suspect. She may even have to turn to her new lover Barson, a ruthless warrior who might have an agenda of his own...

Disappointing

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

It would need a complete rewrite

What do you think your next listen will be?

I like this genre so my next listen would be from here but not this author.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There are not very many audio books that have stopped listening to part way through but I got so bored with this book, I simply had to stop. I am sorry, but this author has a long way to go to engage my attention.

Didn't like any of the charactrs

What would have made The Sorcery Code: Volume 1 better?

Better connection between the characters and some sort of comedy. They were all so boring and obvious that I just couldn't like them. There was also no mystery that made you want to keep listening to find out what it all meant. Again it was just so obvious!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disapointment

Any additional comments?

The basis for the story was interesting, but the characters made the world boring

Hard to take seriously...

It's hard to take a story seriously when over half the content is focused below the waist.

Cliches Galore

What disappointed you about The Sorcery Code: Volume 1?

The writing is pedantic and cliched. This is one of those books with an intriguing idea, is written in grammatically correct prose, but lacks life in the words because of the abundance of cliched phrases used: waiting with bated breath; moving fast as lightning; Out of the corner of her eye; Knew it like the back of his hand; Familiar surroundings making her chest tighten; As natural as breathing; Felt his blood turning to ice; If looks could kill, the expression on her face..."

Phrases like this left the writing dull and unimaginative. I love the world created, but cannot stand the stilted, cliched writing.

If you’ve listened to books by Dima Zales and Anna Zaires before, how does this one compare?

'I haven't read any other books by these two.

Which scene was your favorite?

None, so far.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Its world building is lovely and the narrator does a fine job.

Eh..

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I just finished the Golden Compass and The Discovery Of Witches and this book popped up as something I might enjoy based on those listed above. However, I found the story to be more like a cheesy romance novel then a captivating tale of magic. The Discovery of Witches does have a romance but it is packed with so many interesting ideas and themes that the romance is a fun addition but the story is far more expansive. I guess I was just looking for more. I give it a C+

Not sure I can stomach the first hour

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This would be so much better if the performer didnt sound lke she was a high school student halting and stuttering through a book she forgot to read for class.

Would you ever listen to anything by Dima Zales and Anna Zaires again?

I'm not sure I can listen to enough of the story due to the poor performance to be able to listen to the story in the first place. It seems like a very poor rendering of the "Science Fiction Artificial Intelligence coming to Self-Recognition" wrapped poorly in a fantasy wrapping.

What didn’t you like about Emily Durante’s performance?

Inproper rise of inflection at the end of each phrase making the rhythm of speach an annoying off kilter scratch on the nerves. Her voice for Gala is vapid and makes her sound as if she is the incarnate of the "Dumb Blonde" jokes of the late 80s.. Fortunately, her deeper male voice is somewhat believable. While speaking in character, her phrasing is not too difficult to listen to, but jarringly EVERY time she speaks as the narrator, you're reminded once again that she probably needs to find some other line of work.

I wanted to like it...

I really wanted toylike this book but I did not. I stuck with it hoping it was just a slow start but I never cared about these characters or what happened to them. The narration was stoic and hard to listen to.

Not for sophisticated readers

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A more mature sounding narrator reading less trite material

Would you ever listen to anything by Dima Zales and Anna Zaires again?

no

How could the performance have been better?

The material and descriptions were trite to begin with and made more childish by the narrator's voice and inflections

What character would you cut from The Sorcery Code: Volume 1?

most of them

Any additional comments?

I am not fond of romance novels and this story fits the romance category better than the sci fi/fantasy category

Narrator is terrible

Couldn't get through the first chapter due to the narrator. Listen to the sample before you buy.
