Publisher's summary

He was once a legendary highwayman. Now he's a recluse in a ruined French castle, with only a half-wild wolf for a companion. When Lady Leigh Strachan comes looking for a man to aid in her revenge, she's disillusioned to find that the famed Prince of Midnight couldn't help even if he cared to - which he doesn't. S. T. Maitland wants nothing to do with his legend, or with this fierce, beautiful, broken woman... until the old thrill of living on the cutting edge of danger begins to rise in his blood again.

Laura Kinsale personally chose the exceptional talent of Nicholas Boulton to narrate The Prince of Midnight as a fully voiced audiobook, creating a unique work that brings all the life and color of the original to audio.

Not your run of the mll frilly, more depth and body. Love it. Steamy.

This story had dept. No frilly , nicely fit in a box with a bow jingle of romance. But characters with flows, inner demons, I’m resolved issues. Great author and narrator. If you love basic romance. This is not for you. Give it a try.

Get on with it

I would have enjoyed the book more if the heroine wasn’t so annoying in being resistant to the hero. If anything could have gone wrong with the hero, it did. I like that they were somewhat “real” but it was too much. Didn’t enjoy the cult part. Narration was excellent though.

FANTASTIC

I loved this story before I listened to the audio version but this just made me fall even more in love with it. Narration is SPOT ON. Dear lord, I loved every minute.

Greatness

What can I say, another great experience. Even though Lee was a bit annoying at times, this audio still rinks high. This author and narrator sets the bar high!

Not bad

But t great either. The heroine is strident and mean. Although we understand why, It can get tiresome.

Do yourself a favor.

Nicholas Boulton reading Kinsale is a dream. This is not a lightweight fluffy story, but at the same time I found it to be an easy listen. Best author, best narration. I honestly don't want to give away any of the story. It is a delicious treat which I will come back to yearly.

A Gigantic Leap Above Historical Romance

And masterfully performed. One of my top 3 all time favorites. One of the funniest scenes in any book ever. I can't understand why it isn't more highly rated.

You couldn't ask for a better narrator

Really a 3 star book but with 5 star narration.

In general, I love Laura Kinsale. In addition to her beautiful writing, with her you always get something just a little different, which is definitely the case here. In this case, we have hero and heroine who are both very damaged and very flawed, though in totally non-cliched ways. Unfortunately, the plot is also pretty flawed in places and the heroine is not only flawed but also pretty unlikeable through most if the book. This is a long book, with many subplots, some of which work better than others.

However, if you listen to this as an audiobook, none of that will matter because Nicholas Boulton's voice is so beautiful you wouldn't care what he was reading. It is really hard to narrate romance well, but he does it perfectly. His French is irresistible and his drunken S.T. was hilarious. He doesn't give women an annoying falsetto. He doesn't overdramatize. I will go off into cliches if I try to describe his deep, rich voice. Suffice to say, his narration is perfect.

Her words and his voice...

If you could sum up The Prince of Midnight in three words, what would they be?

Mesmerizing. Seductive. Escape.

Who was your favorite character and why?

ST Maitland. He was so ...human. Strong and arrogant enough to be human, and yet flawed and uncertain enough to love.

What does Nicholas Boulton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

That is a laughable question - if you listened, you would not have to ask. His voice brings the inflection, pain, love, humor and humanity to exactly (I am convinced) what Laura Kinsale intended.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. and no. Laura's writing is such that the humanity and flaws are so apparent, that it is uncomfortable at times. You find yourself about to jump out of your car (in my case) in frustration that "He/She is so infuriating!! Come on...can't you see that he/she is reaching out or at their breaking point of balancing ego and vulnerability?" Then you love the author for making you feel this much and Nicholas for taking you away from reality into belief.

Any additional comments?

I have listened to the pairing of Laura Kinsale and Nicholas Boulton and dreading when I reach the last one.
