Jo Beverley continues her winning streak with this brilliantly woven tale of romantic intrigue.
Returning home from the battle of Waterloo, Major George "Hawk" Hawkinville discovers his father has squandered away the family estate. To keep his home, Hawk decides to marry Clarissa Greystone, a contemptuous gold-digger, who’s vast fortune isn’t her only asset.

"Head and shoulders above the usual Regency fare, this novel's sensitive prose, charismatic characters and expert plotting will keep readers enthralled from first page to last." (Publishers Weekly)
This is one of my favorites. The hero and heroine are well written. He has just returned to England after Waterloo and trying to adjust to civilian life. She is trying to recover from an abusive relationship involving her family's' trying to force her to marry a truly evil man who mysteriously turned up dead. Did she kill him for his money? He was not the type of man to leave his wealth to a fiancée and yet his will seems to indicate he did that. The skills Hawk learned trying to gather intelligence during the Napoleonic War are put to use trying to determine whether she is as innocent as she first appears.
Simon Prebble doesn't just narrate the story, his wonderful voice creates the atmosphere and pulls the listener into the story. This story is perfect for his talent.
George "Hawk" Hawkinville. He is brilliant, thoughtful, a true and loyal friend and a dangerous enemy.
I've never been disappointed with any of the audible books I've heard him narrate. Even when some of the storylines were not as strong as others, he has the ability to bridge the areas of weakness and keep my interest.
Definitely. It is hours long but it is a page turner.
Just writing about how much I enjoyed it makes me want to listen to it again. :)
The main characters
How the main character needs to marry to save his estate and the people who live there.
He makes you feel the strain of the descissions that have to be made by the male character.
When the heiroine does not give up.
This book was more interesting than the reviews would have made you think.
I couldn't get into the story because the reader was boring.
This is not a problem with the author but the performance of the reader
He was boring and makes the story hard to follow
I would not select a book with this reader again.
This book is enjoyed most when one has read all the preceding books in the series. It can be enjoyed as a stand alone, however it is much better in the context of the other books.
Bought this book at a sale and had a great time listening to it. The story line was fun and exciting (my first book in this series but after this one I will certainly buy more).
The narrator is amazing!!!
Story line has romance, action, plot twists and fun characters.
Love it !
