I thought the story for this sounded really interesting and could be a fun romance. Instead of being fun, I found the dialog between Maddox and Ashlyn to be forced. The majority of their conversations seemed to be single words. All the men in this novel are to be "big, strong warriors" but instead of having an attractive appeal, it was a complete turn off because they became more like brutes. Every time one of the men spoke (for the most part) all I could think was caveman and "me man, you my women." The attempts to make Maddox seem more emotional just left me thinking "gah!" and seemed unbelievable to me. This book also struck me as being very formulaic. Beautiful virgin finds handsome warrior who reveals a tender side which no one ever knew he had and they have steamy sex, then something happened and must be saved by the handsome warrior. Also, the language and wording used during the multiple sex scenes were turn offs for me and no at all romantic and were repetitive. At one point I just wanted the plot to get moving and skipped ahead during a sex scene by 15 minutes and it was still going. The male reader I also found did not appeal to me. I think he only increased how weird the sex scenes were because he voice didn't change much, it felt very monotone. In the end, I was very happy for this book to be over and don't think I will trying any more by this author.
This book could have been so much better. I liked the idea of the story, and was even able to get past a number of mental obstacles...their love at first sight encounter and her special ability. But I just couldn't get past how all of the lords sounded like a bunch of uneducated cavemen. They barely spoke in full sentences, and seemed to be pretty ignorant about the world they lived in. You would think for being hundreds of years old that they would be more refined and worldly. They order furniture online, but don't know what aspirin is. For me, it was a major turn off. This is the first and last book I will purchase in this series. Too bad...the story was actually pretty interesting.
I liked the character of Ashlyn, vulnerable and fiesty at the same time.
I hated the conversation between the Lords.
The sacrifice by Ashlyn. No spoilers here.
Too often the male voices failed to match the character, or the narrator spoke with a different characters voice. Was confusing and bad
Was hoping to find another great series.... not so much. Consistently found myself rolling my eyes.
The story line had potential but did not come close to reaching it. I might have been able to enjoy it a little if I had not just finished reading all of Kresley Coles books. Kresley Cole is a genius. Read all of her books instead... skip this one.
Yes... But the writing was so bad you couldn't really enjoy it.
I really enjoy the world of books! Narration just add layers to that world... don't u think? :)
OMG!!! I forgot how awesome these "Lords" truly are....
"We'll give you Tylenol"... the sweetest, saddest, and most gut wrenching phrase I have ever listen to in an audio book... Tears... I tell you... tears (drip, drip, drop).
When Ash gave her life for Maddox... OMG! Best scene ever...
Now I know why I keep re-listening to these books... On to book 2! Listen to the prequel before the this book, really does add a level of (I know what's going on).... in the beginning...
Bellmore is one great narrator... especially during the gut wrenching moments...
Well worth a credit...buy or sale...
Slow plot movement....VERY SLOW....and sluggish dialogue. Could only think...."Move faster" Maybe by the end of the series this gets faster paced.
He was trying. Arduous material. There could have been greater distiction between the men.
Where have I been??? Under a rock apparently! Lords of the underworld....awesomely fantastic! I purchased book one several months ago and sadly it's been catching dust on my bookshelf. Finally I am in the know with this series. I LOVED this first book and plan to buy the entire series so I can catch up with the rest of the listeners that have given such rave reviews. I totally concur whole-heartedly. If you're a fan of paranormal romances this is definitely one to get. I adore the lead characters Maddox and Ashlyn. Their romance really spoke to me and of course I'm a sucker for a hunky guy that falls head over heels and isn't ashamed to shout it to the world! The other Lords are equally as interesting and my ears are burning to hear the remaining stories. Looks like I won't be getting any sleep or working very hard...oh well! :-) highly recommend this book as a credit purchase.
I listened a few weeks ago and am still struck by how annoyed I was that the story could have been great, but instead, I felt cheated by multiple poorly written sex scenes. I enjoy a little passion, but after a while it just felt raunchy. And I really did want the story to be better, but now I won't follow up on the series.
I am in love with pararomance and am always trying to find new series with a great story and sizzling hot spots!
Great story, I absolutely love how each character has their own person hell they have to deal with.
For now, Lucian, I am very curious about him...
I thought he was wonderful! For those of you who have complained about how slow he speaks, you CAN speed up the narrator. I sped him to 1.5 and it was PERFECT. I love that he has a different voice for every single male character. I love Robert Petkoff but Max is now my other fav!
I absolutely did.
Also, people that complain about a book being a "waste" of a credit, you CAN redeem it if you disliked a book.
So here's my thing: if I'm going to read a gushy romance, then ok, that's cool. But if I pick up a book that looks like the cover of this one does, I'm not looking for sappy romance. I'm looking for hot sex/ sexual tension that eventually leads people to realize they really care for each other. This was kind of the case, but I'm sorry, maybe I'm too much like a guy in that way, but I can't STAND when characters who have known each other for less than a week (regardless of how intense the connection) start dropping the L-bomb like it's going out of style. I dunno, it's almost too much for me and makes the story instantly cheesy and off-putting. No wonder my boyfriend adores me. I'd rather they bump uglies real good so we know how much they care about each other than hear professions of eternal affection. So if you aren't bothered by that, you will probably love this book. It just happens that I don't.
