Publisher's summary

Sebastian Malheur is the most dangerous sort of rake: an educated one. When he’s not scandalizing ladies in the bedchamber, he’s outraging proper society with his scientific theories. He’s desired, reviled, acclaimed, and despised - and he laughs through it all. Violet Waterfield, the widowed Countess of Cambury, on the other hand, is entirely respectable, and she’d like to stay that way. But Violet has a secret that is beyond ruinous, one that ties her irrevocably to England’s most infamous scoundrel: Sebastian’s theories aren’t his. They’re hers. So when Sebastian threatens to dissolve their years-long conspiracy, she’ll do anything to save their partnership...even if it means opening her vulnerable heart to the rake who could destroy it for good.

The books in the Brothers Sinister series:

  • ½. The Governess Affair (prequel novella)
  • 1. The Duchess War
  • 1½. A Kiss for Midwinter (a companion novella to The Duchess War)
  • 2. The Heiress Effect

Each audiobook stands alone, but those who prefer to read in order might want to start at the beginning.

Remains a favorite

Could be read as a standalone, but if you plan to read the Brothers Sinister series, don’t start here to avoid spoilers. Aside from containing a chef’s kiss of an author’s note, I really like the camaraderie in this book, and series. Sebastian & Violet have a long history of friendship that is real, have problematic relatives they love regardless, math, science, and greenhouse experiments.

One of the only romances with a misunderstanding (or two) that pays off without making the reader get frustrated. There are multiple reveals so instead of going on to my usual length, I’ll cap my review by recommending it highly. The Countess Conspiracy is in my top favorites (a Desert Island Keeper). It holds up to rereads, in part because the reveals come at you differently, but still work.

Steam: Med Low. Very slow burn but does get to on page sexytimes of varying sorts. There is great consent & discussions of birth control, which is one of Sebastian’s areas of expertise.

Narration: Continues to be great, with varying voices to aid listening. There are weepy parts, which are easier to continue with audio.

Masterpiece of a story.

Loved the chemistry between the two main characters. The passion for science is detailed beautifully. I laughed, I gasped, I laughed again. Rosalyn Landor does an amazing job bringing the characters to life. Overall a great story.

This was a tough one

Overall I liked this story since I love stories about smart women who persevere. The fact that women were, and still are, overlooked for their accomplishments is galling...still. My biggest issue with this story is the constant fighting and verbal abuse from family...for BOTH Violet and Sebastian. Sebastian's brother should have been smacked. It was SO obvious that he was sick with jealousy of Sebastian. It was hard to listen to that verbal tirade over and over. Also difficult to listen to Violets snide remarks. Sebastian didn't deserve that. I recommend but with the caveat that you have to stick with it. It gets better and the ending is worth the wait.

Clever whitty and entertaining

I loved this book. About time someone wrote about the courage and challenges of women in those times.
I was also delighted that there weren’t long drawn out sex scenes which can become boring when I suppose they are supposed to titillate. Because of that there were a lot more plot points that held my interest throughout.

Had to give this 5 star cause of the scientist storyline

So it actually took me awhile to finish this book and I didn’t think the romance aspect was as good as the previous books, but I loved the overall story and there was a lot of great research that went into it! So I’m giving 5 star for the book overall, but I put 4 star on the story cause of the romance. I’m a female scientist so it’s awesome to see books like this in the romance world. It means a lot to me that Courtney Milan wrote this so well.
