Publisher's summary

In Grimsgrave Hall, enigmatic Nicholas Brisbane has inherited a ruined estate, replete with uncanny tenants and one unwanted houseguest: Lady Julia Grey. Despite his admonitions to stay away, Lady Julia arrives in Yorkshire to find Brisbane as remote and maddeningly attractive as ever. Cloistered together, they share the moldering house with the proud but impoverished remnants of an ancient family: the sort that keeps their bloodline pure and their secrets close. Lady Allenby and her daughters, dependent upon Brisbane and devastated by their fall in society, seem adrift on the moor winds, powerless to change their fortunes. But poison does not discriminate between classes.... A mystery unfolds from the rotten heart of Grimsgrave, one Lady Julia may have to solve alone, as Brisbane appears inextricably tangled in its heinous twists and turns. But blood will out, and before spring touches the craggy northern landscape, Lady Julia will have uncovered a Gypsy witch, a dark rider, and a long-buried legacy of malevolence and evil. Deanna Raybourn spins a gripping tale of loyalty and lust, set against the wild beauty of the Yorkshire moors.

Victorian Gothic done right

The third installment in the Lady Julia Grey series is just as entertaining as the first two, a lovely historical mystery where the plot refuses to take backseat to the romance developing between the two lead characters. I deducted a star because I saw the twist coming halfway through the book, but that might be because I've read a lot of gothic mystery/horror. It didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying myself, and grabbing the next book in the series. The narrator is very pleasant to listen to, capturing the characters well.

disappointing

For an independent woman who is spunky and brought up to be herself, this endless chasing after an enigmatic man is ridiculous. The whole premise of this book sits in soggy peat moss. I enjoyed the first 2 books but find myself falling asleep listening to this one.

Better on tape

I love Julia Grey, but this one the first one I read as opposed to listened to and it left me feeling a little disappointed. Sometime later I went back and re-listened to all the previous books and I decided to get this audiobook too. So glad I did! I don't know why, but I found it much better on tape than in print. True story ...

Gothic Romance Mystery

Enjoyed listening to the gothic verbiage. Characters are well developed in a mystic setting where romance and mystery are both revealed as the fog lifts from the moor.

Finally!

I thought the leads would never get together! Three books it took to get them to actually get engaged and married. I like the writing and dialogue and this third book was the most interesting by far in terms of plot and surroundings but solving the mysteries seems weak. Frequently the guilty parties are caught in the act or blurt out their guilt rather than the investigators cleverly uncovering the mysteries. So I have mixed feelings about the first three books.

A perfect conclusion

I know that this isn't the last book in this series. But it feels like it may have been planned as the last book and I would have been content if that were the case.

I do love Ellen Archer's performance, I get drawn into the story with her different voices and style.

The story itself was wonderful and brought back multiple plot points and pieces of the previous books to culminate in a satisfying ending.

Except for poor Jane and Portia! But I think that is being addressed in the next book in this series. I'm hoping that will resolve their plot line well and doesn't fall into the "bury your gays" trope. Crossing my fingers.

So I suppose I do need another book :)

Maybe My Favorite Of The Series So Far...

The third volume in the Lady Grey series shifts the setting north - for springtime in the moors. Though uninvited, Julia, accompanied by her sister Portia and her younger brother Valerius, travels to the house and property that Brisbane has recently been awarded as payment for his investigative success. The reception isn't very welcoming (and Julia's determination to resolve her relationship with Brisbane makes this one of the more exciting on a personal level to the series arc). But the property is rife with its own mysteries - the connection to Brisbane's own past, corpses uncovered and even attempted murder. All in all, it's one of the most exciting entrants to the series - although I must admit that its plot is perhaps the most predictable but that really doesn't detract from the overall fun of the book (who doesn't like to be right, after all?).

The performance in the audio version is so strong that it really just makes this a genuine joy to listen to! I am so thankful that I discovered this series through book club! The characters all really come to life and especially the series regulars are just so likable! My only complaint about this one is that the tumbled rush of the end summarizes an event that in many ways has been building up for three books, and I hope that we will get more detail than this rather paltry summary! I have a feeling that the novella next in the series might and I am thankful that I don't have to wait to start listening, as I definitely found myself listening to this one at every opportunity - during work, doing chores around the house and even while watching some of the World Series on mute (who needs announcers?!).

Very enjoyable denouement

Very enjoyable third novel in the series, which although the series might possibly continue, does provide a satisfying romantic denouement. Had fun listening to it, would recommend as a light, fun read.
