Publisher's summary

New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts deftly blends romance and suspense in this compelling novel of a woman whose career, marriage, and very life are threatened by the truth about her own past.

Emma McAvoy may have grown up in the limelight, but some secrets are hidden in a darkness no light can reach. Now on the verge of a successful career, and having fallen in love with the man of her dreams, Emma is looking to the future. Yet it’s the past that is about to catch up with her.

For Emma, her childhood had been almost like a rags-to-riches fairy tale - until the tragic night that changed her family forever. But what Emma thinks she knows about that terrible night and the man she’s about to marry is only half the truth. The other half is locked away in the last place she’d ever think to look: her own memories. It’s a mystery a handsome and relentlessly driven homicide detective needs to solve in a case that’s haunted him for years - and a secret someone will kill to keep.

Great story but bad narration

Horrible narration. I’ve never read a bad Nora Roberts book. Like all of her others this was no disappointment. The narration though is another story. I suggest you read this one and skip the audio.

Rock and Roll blues

Hard rock fans will recognize the heady needs of the performers. Drugs, groupies, kidnapping, narcissism… it’s all here along with murder.

Miniseries of a Band and A Life

Ok, I've read someone's one star review of this (very long) story and I thought I'd balance it out with mine. Be ready for a long and intricate fictional story about one family, one band, the ins and outs of this band's music as well as the love lives of the members. There's love, tragedy, perseverance, honor, dishonor, murder, and more love.

As an American, I found the cadence of the book a little slow and a little grey - as I imagine an ordinary day in the UK might be; but underneath this slow burn was a story that I let evolve around me. I won't lie and say I listened to every word. There were 3 or 4 chapters somewhere in the 20s that I skipped and listened back on the last 30 seconds of the previous chapter to get all caught up. I mentally caught up quickly, so no harm done to the integrity of the story. After skipping those few chapters, I hunkered down while cleaning and listened to the rest of it. I started and finished this book in 2 days. In the end, I'm glad I listened to it on tape as I'm not sure I could have gotten through a paper version. The book left me feeling ok with the storyline. Good for having finished it. Ok with spending 2 days with it, and satisfied with the ending.

As I said in the title, this book is like a miniseries. It does not fall quickly around you. You will have to be patient with the characters even when you want to scream, "Get on with it! That's a terrible choice!" Haha. If you just let the storyline happen, you'll have read or listened to a good book.

Good Book

Enjoyable book but bad accents in the audiobook. The American voice was on point but the Irish accents were not great.

Wonderful story

Even though this takes place in the 1980’s, the story is still marvelous and well performed.

Love Nora Roberts

I had a bit more effort getting through this book, but it was worth reading. My book mark fell out when I going to visit a friend, so I may not have picked up the story at exactly where I was when I actually began reading again. Nevertheless I enjoyed this book!
