Dr. Melanie Lipton is no stranger to the supernatural. She knows immortals better than they know themselves, right down to their stubborn little genes. So although a handsome rogue immortal seems suspicious to her colleagues, Sebastien Newcombe intrigues Melanie. His history is checkered, his scars are impressive, and his ideas are daring. But it's not his ideas that have Melanie fighting off surges of desire....
Bastien is used to being the bad guy. In fact, he can't remember the last time he had an ally he could trust. But Melanie is different - and under her calm, professional exterior he senses a passion beyond anything in his centuries of experience. Giving in to temptation is out of the question - he can't put her in danger. But she isn't asking him....

"Both characters have realistic and very human emotions, lending them significant relatability. Duvall uses recurring characters from previous titles to continue building her intriguing paranormal world with increasing flair and writerly skill." (Publishers Weekly)
I have really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this series. I like how we get to know Sebastian better in this book. Things that were hinted about in the first books we revisit in this book. Highly recommend all of the books in this series.
I have already listen to it twice. I like where the storyline is going
Just as good as the first two, love all the characters
Yes, this is the best
Yes, I loved when they tracked down the bad guy and Amy was able to get her revenge.
Can't wait for the next book in the series.
There is so much drama, suspense and action in every chapter! This is a very moving love story between Bastian and Melanie.
Bastian. Who doesnt love a wounded soul?
I thought Kirsten Potter did a great job. Loved her voice!
Fast paced romance and danger
I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance. I am smitten with her stories and characters. The stories will not disappoint!!!
Say something about yourself!
I loved the book and the reader. It had action and love senses that were hot and I love hot. And at times I had to laugh at the way the main lady talked to her new lover. He was like a man from the 1800's and had no problem telling her just how he wanted to make her feel good. And she had no trouble keeping him on his toes and making him feel like she thought he was no big deal and she could take him or leave him. But her body told him different. Well going forward in the book things change and the twists and turns kept me into the book and I loved it. I'll wait for the next book to come out. I read the first two as this was the third in the series. But I can't really remember them so I'm going back to read them all over again. I love to laugh and feel the HOT togetherness in these books along with action that has you holding your breath one minute and laughing the next. I would pay a credit for it.
There was a story line that branched off. The characters are developed and the interactions between them are humorous and endearing. You feel vested in all relationships and their interactions. The romance is believable and sensual.
Her other books, Night Reigns, same author. They are good but Jeanine Frost is better. The story makes you want more.
She did all the characters very well. You feel vested. She brings them to life.
I actually did listen in one day. After trying some other books with disappointment I have listen to all her books several times. It makes for a clean house.
This is another one of those Romance novels that could easily carry it's weight in another Genera. It's has enough depth of plot, story, and character development to stand on it's own. Add that to the steamy scenes and it's an awesome book.
Yes, because of Kristen Potter. She is my new favorite narrator.
Flow from one book to another is flawless. Love the character development throughout the series.
Appreciated the voice inflection and emotion conveyed. Very easy to determine character speaking and follow conversations. Narrator becomes a part of the story. Loved the fact that she was able to convey in voice the exact character and personality of each person.
I'm a sucker for romance, good triumphing over evil and a happy ending. This series has it all.
Diane Duvall and Kristen Potter are a perfect partnership!
I would absolutely recommend this book for those who like a fast paced, action packed, love story with a twist in the paranormal. This book hit all the things I look for in a great novel. Mystery, love, passion, humor, great characters, fast pace, and a story that keeps you up at night wanting to know more.
I love hearing all of the accents of the different characters from around the world. She really does a great job! Even the men's voices are believable and the women's voices are distinct yet realistic.
There were a large number of laughing outbursts and a couple of slightly tear jerking moments. Overall, this book was a pleasure to listen to!
I strongly recommend starting with the first book in the series if you haven't started reading them yet. The first book could stand alone but after that the story builds strongly on the story line of the previous book.
Totally enjoyed "Phantom Shadows” more than the other two books because it's focus was on Bastien the underdog bad boy of the Immortal Guardians. And I always root for the underdogs.
Diana Duvall developed the relationship between Bastien & Melanie perfectly. And she didn't have to do it through sexual exploits, like so many writer do today. Which by the way is really disappointing sometimes. Don't get me wrong there was a strong physical attraction between the two, but it was not overdone.
Bastien is a self-proclaim bad boy with a bad attitude, who believes he is not worst loving, until he runs into the lovely sassy Melanie that comes at him with a two sided axe chopping his belief down like a lumber jack chopping down a tree.
Bravo Mrs. Duvall!!!
To add the cherry on top it was delivered by one of the best narrator on Audible - Kristen Potter.
The introduction of new characters with underlying references on the books too come.
If you like Black Dagger Brothers by JR Ward or Midnight Breed series by Laura Adrian you'll like the "world" created by Dianne Duvall.
Fearless heroines. Love a character who fights for what she wants and is not a victim needing rescue by the hero. I really like that Melanie looked beyond others characters hate for Sebastian and explored their growing relationship with gentle prods to determine his true feelings.
