This stunning blend of historical romance and time traveling adventure has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world and catapulted author Diana Gabaldon to the top of the New York Times best seller list. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

Absolutely Riveting

If you could sum up Outlander in three words, what would they be?

Adventure, Romance, Suspense

What was one of the most memorable moments of Outlander?

The relationship between Jamie and Clare is amazing and HOT!

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Davina Porter brings the characters to life through some of the best narration I have listened to.

Any additional comments?

This book is one of my all time favourites! I could listen to it over and over again! A must read if you love historical romance and adventure!

One of my favorite novels, and fantastic narration

I've loved this series for years and just re-listened to Outlander for the third or fourth time. The story is timeless.
Davina Porter's narration is like a Gallic lesson - I've looked at the book in print and would never have figured out the pronunciations of names & endearments without her able assistance. She has very specific voices for all the characters and they come alive with her reading.

Warning: there is a great deal of fairly graphic sex and some violence and rape (not gratuitous - it's central to the story), so be aware that it can be triggering to some individuals. It's not George RR Martin-level torture, but pretty grisly nonetheless.

Fabulous

This is an amazing story but made so much more enjoyable by the narration of Diana Gabalon - the woman is unbelievable. I listened in awe to her narration, her
use of the language is something most of us can only inspire to. Highly recommended.

Well worth the time and money.

I first heard about this series from a friend, who said it was one of the richest, most well thought out and brilliant storytelling that she had ever read. That was quite a remark, coming from her. Then, my librarian suggested it too. So I pulled it up here, and I admit, I was very hesitant to start this book, and not just because historical-romance was not my forte. I was honestly unsure of how long the book was. I mean, 40+ hours?! Wow. And for only one credit?! I've bought other books that were less than 30 hours and required 2 credits, so it seemed odd to me. Could it really be *that* good, and only require one credit? Anyway, I obviously caved and downloaded it. I started listening to it as I was working on a Christmas project for my family. Before I knew it, the project was done and I was looking for other things to do just so I could continue to listen! This narrator is a perfect match for these books. I absolutely LOVED her style! Her voice is perfect for the main character, it just fits her easy going, loving, tender yet passionate personality. And she can handle an incredible range of voices! She switches beautiful between character's while maintaining each of their accents and individual speech patterns. She used emotions, too, which really helped bring this story to life. I reached the end of the story within a week, and felt disappointed it was already over. I wanted more! I had 40+ hours, and it wasn't enough! Thank goodness there were plenty more in the series. I currently am on the 4th one, but I am taking my time. There is no rushing this series, it's meant to truly be enjoyed. The author intended for that, I think, by the way she paces her writing. It's long and thought out, but not dull or tedious or lulling. Give it a try. It's well worth the time and the money!

THE BEST!!!

Don't ever fool yourself and think listening to an abridged recording is an OK thing to do. This may be long (30+hrs.) but you will be sobbing when it is over. Davina Porter's narration is perfection and "Outlander" will start you on a journey you'll never forget. Now if we can just get audible to bring in the other 5 novels in the series as unabridged editions, all will be right with the world. Once you know Jamie and Claire, you will never forget them. This is the book that you will reccommend to everyone you know and reread to get your fix once you have finished the series. READ THIS BOOK!!!( OK, listen to this book, but just get this book!!!)

Wow

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This story is not just a story, I felt completely taken away and placed in to 1700s Scotland. I purchased this for my long daily work commute, and found myself listening with headphones everywhere else I could. The narration is perfect in accents, tones, voices, it's perfect.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's VERY long, and while I found that I could not stop listening, you do need to take breaks. The violence and suspense can get very intense.
