Publisher's summary

This stunning blend of historical romance and time traveling adventure has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world and catapulted author Diana Gabaldon to the top of the New York Times best seller list. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

started off slow but I'm glad I didn't stop

If you could sum up Outlander in three words, what would they be?

Heart grasping listen

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jamie. So strong mentally and physically

Which scene was your favorite?

The hot springs

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Time travelers adventure

Any additional comments?

I usually steer from time travel but this book was great and different in so many ways. I originally started out thinking It was gonna be boring but once characters were established it picked up. In the end I was grateful that the author took the time to establish each one.

Best Series Ever!

There is not enough to say about Diana Gabaldon and the Outlander series. It is by far the best series of books I have ever read. I enjoy them so much I have read each one at least twice. This first book though, is my favorite. You will fall in love with Jamie and Claire as you follow them through life's love, trials, and tribulations. The writing is superb with excellent character development and plot lines. There are unexpected twists and turns that will keep you listening for hours. Davina Porter has to be the best in her field as well, as she delivers an exceptional performance in so many voices and accents, its hard to believe that one person can do all that! Just read it! #Outlander #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

The writer, the narrator and the story EXCELLENT

I had not read any of these books until 2017 when a friend encouraged me to read them. I love fictional history and who doesn't like a love story! All 8 books are a wonderful escape to a different time and place. I cannot wait until book 9 is out, hopefully in 2018. I did not watch the TV series until the summer of 2017 so that was not the driver of why I was lead to this book series. When listening to this I can picture every aspect of the scene and I could not wait for the next chapter.

Enjoyed the story - stretched my imagination...

Imagine Starwars backward... From the 1940's back to the 17th century, war and peace, love & war. Masterful mix of modern English intertwined with the Jacobean. Steamy sex, love & war. Can't believe I enjoyed it, but I did.

Outlander

I loved the story. The narrator was wonderful. Most memorable moment is Jamie's and Claire's wedding.

Best narration I have heard so far!

The narrator is superb, she elevates the story to the highest level. I read the books first and loved them. Now I am enthralled with the characters as Davina Porter brings them to a full rich life. Absolutely fantastic!

I will listen to this over and over

Davina does an amazing job of all the accents. Her tone and inflection are spot on with the mood of each passage. I hear something new every time I listen. I read the book myself the first time, but the audio book gives me a story I love with a new interpretation. I own the entire Outlander series in both book and audio form because I will actually read/listen to them over and over.

Favourite book series ever!

Gotta listen as well as read, Davina seems (to an Aussie) to have the Gallic, French English and Scots accents down so well that actually reading it is more of a chore! Laugh out loud, cry too, just watch when you're driving, those tears are a hazard! So emotive, Diana does such a brilliant job of the story, you can't put these books down. Read them twice and listened twice as well, my husband now addicted too lol.
Many Happy Reading Hours,
Regards, Jenny

beautiful and moving, but a little too long

The narration is amazing, the story is full of beautiful details and feelings; it is a bit too graphic, and the violent parts are at times moving to the point of you almost feeling the physical pain! Some of the reviews complain of the violence in the book - but if you liked Braveheart, you wouldn't mind. It is a little too long, though, and it is exhausting me to think about the many (also very long) sequels - but I am still eager to read them
