Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

Featured Article: Outlander Timeline Explained

There are eight audiobooks in the Outlander time travel series, with more planned. Most of the audiobooks are more than 30 hours long, which means the series covers a lot of story. And since the series follows Claire back and forth in time, and sometimes covers both her and Jamie’s timelines simultaneously, it’s a lot to keep track of when you’re listening. It’s almost as dizzying as time traveling yourself! Can’t keep the timeline of Outlander straight? Don’t worry, we’ve got the entire timeline explained, plus the rules on time travel in the popular series.

Good, needs less romance, more historical color

Where does Outlander rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Right in the middle

If you’ve listened to books by Diana Gabaldon before, how does this one compare?

The best of this idea is the historical novel piece, and Gabaldon improves on this as the series progresses. But the initial book is most intent on being a harlequin romance.

I believe this will be a classic one day!

I have to say i was pleasantly surprised by the book, the narration, the plot, the twists. It is so rare to find a true writer that I have to five this my whole hearted thumbs up in spite of the time travel! If you are a reader/listener who enjoys a true novel then this is the book for you. I am not going into the characters or plots like some reviewers choose to do. By chapter three you will be hooked.

The story is awesome and the narrator even more!

Diana and Davina formed an excellent team. The story has everything in it: comedy, romance, fights, political intrigue, sci-fi, steaming moments. And the narrator carefully read each passage and character line with care and personality, making it an enhanced experience.

Outlander, Part 1 of a thrilling Time Adventure

Outlander is the story of Claire Beechum Randall who inadvertently finds herself whisked away from the familiar surroundings of modern life in 1943, to the barbaric life of Scotland in 1743. Unable to return to her present time, she settles into life with the Highlanders. I won't go into more detail for fear of ruining it for those that haven't read or listened to this book. This book and the sequel, Dragonfly in Amber, keep you on the edge of your seat. You find yourself whisked away from 21st century life to follow Claire in her adventures with the Mackenzie Clan and later, the Frasers. The only drawback I find with these 2 books is there are occasions where the narrative becomes quite graphic, especially the sexual scenes. The storyline is awesome and once you start listening, you won't want to stop, but the graphic details of sexual activities are a drawback. If you can deal with that aspect of these books, they are a good read/listen for the scifi enthusiast.

Something for everyone

Where does Outlander rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This ranks pretty closely with the game of thrones series I've listened to through audible. I love the narrator and the story is well done! I'm listening after watching the show and was pleased that the show follows the books quite closely. That's good writing for you.

What did you like best about this story?

I love Claire's interest in medicinal plants and botany and her constant problem solving in trying to fit into the 18th century. The story not only has all the elements of action, romance, and adventure, but there's always some interesting tidbit of information that you take away from each scene whether it's about history, politics, medicine or even fighting off a wild animal.

Which scene was your favorite?

Any scene Jamie is a part of, obviously. Everybody wants Jamie.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This love story is less than soft and fuzzy- in fact, it deals with the gritty realties of 18th century life, often graphically. It can be a bit dark at times, especially when dealing with issues of trauma, torture, and rape. Luckily the author is tactful and respectful. She manages to conjure the realism without being too shocking or controversial. I especially appreciated its neutral treatment of religion which is often an area that can turn me off of a book completely.

Any additional comments?

Claire is kind of a narcissistic self involved b***. I was impressed at how well the actress in the show perfectly captures her obnoxious temperament. But whether you love her or love to hate her, she definitely grows on you and her narration is believable and compelling.
