Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

High Expectations Met

What did you love best about Outlander?

I first read the paper version of the Outlander series a few years ago. Knowing that I was scheduled to make a lot of flights and travel, I decided to try the audible version. I already knew and loved the stories, which would lessen the "gamble" of purchasing something unfamiliar. The audio version met my requirements; that 9 hour transatlantic travel was made bearable with my old friends, Claire and Jamie.

What other book might you compare Outlander to and why?

Outlander is a fantastical story with a large dose of historical fiction and lots of bodice ripping. It is hard to compare to other historical fictions, as I typically read the drier versions.

Which scene was your favorite?

I can not identify one particular scene.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The paper copy of this book is around 1000 pages. I knew I could never listen to it in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

My only very slight criticism of the book is that I expected Claire to have a younger voice. Not a young voice, mind. Just younger. Nonetheless, as what frequently happens in this kind of thing, one adjusts.

Must Read, when waiting for new season!

Got into Outlander because of the show. Love the acting but I will say there are some differences, good differences in the books. The whole time I envisioned the actors while listening, there's details that I don't think the show was able to fit. Fell in love more with Outlander. Recommend listening after you've watched all the episodes, so far, on Starz lol

A Great Look at the Past

I was shocked to find out I have gone all these years not having read this book. The positive is that I have the rest of the series to look forward to without waiting!

Wha too you get when...

What did you love best about Outlander?

You have a book written by a writer who is exceptionally technically proficient AND can tell an absolutely marvelous story and then you have a spectacularly interpretive reader tell it her way? Literary genious. The absolute pinacle of storytelling.

What other book might you compare Outlander to and why?

Who else writes historical-science-romance-fiction?

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

She absolutely NAILS the voices. Her characterization are so perfect. They don't muddy or obscure (or worse yet, stereotype) the characters. They are simple magic.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Nope

Any additional comments?

Salon magazine said it best: "the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting 'Scrooge McDuck' comics."

Love Jamie and Claire- and Davina's Narration!

Loved this book. Love the love story between Claire and Jamie. Davina is queen of narration. Diana writes such a captivating story- makes me wish all men were like Jamie!

A Great Love Story!

I really enjoyed listening to this book almost as much as watching the show! It's nice to see that the show followed the book so closely, but I didn't expect the book to end so abruptly. The narrator was exceptional!
