Publisher's summary

This stunning blend of historical romance and time traveling adventure has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world and catapulted author Diana Gabaldon to the top of the New York Times best seller list. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

Featured Article: The Best Women Narrators to Listen to Right Now

One of the biggest questions listeners have when it comes to approaching a new audiobook is whether or not they'll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable, as audiobooks are at least a few hours long (with many clocking in at 20 hours long—or more!), and sticking with one person's voice for that time period can feel like a big commitment. We rounded up some of the best female narrators with a robust list of audiobooks under their belts.

Great listen !

I love this book! Started reading it in preparation for my trip to Scotland and fell in love. The story takes many hours to be told but definitely worth it. I was sucked in every time it played, I could see all the characters and scenery as if I was watching the show. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the series unravels.

Loved it!

I had read the series in print and was hesitant to spend the $ to listen to it. So glad I did! The narrator does a fabulous job of distinguishing each character and accents, much better than reading it myself. If I could give it more stars I would.

Wonderful experience! Like watching the series!

I finished the last season and missed Claire and Jaimy so I decided to listen to the book. I was surprised to discover the series did not start far from the book. I loved the talented narration and like the TV series, I didn't want it to end.

♡ Perfection

Loved it. Began Dragonfly in Amber immediately. Wish I had known about these sooner! Most definitely recommend.

A love story to love

I loved how the love story between Claire and Jaime was actually believable. It was refreshing to see their relationship build up over time instead of just meeting one minute and then within a week or less they're magically head over heals in love with no apparent reason outside of physical attraction.

Over the course of the book, the author did a great job of giving plenty of detail without coming off as long winded or unnecessary; which is particularly impressive because of the length of the book. I finished in less than four days simply because the whole story kept me enticed all the way through.

The narrator also does an impecable job. There were so many times I found myself grinning from her performance and the story. Her performance paired with the story just really made me feel and relate to Claire. The Scottish and British English accents were pretty good, not obnoxious or rough.

I am indifferent towards historical romance, but the details while Claire is in each time period seemed relatively consistent to what you would expect in late 1700s and late 1940s. I thought the time travel aspect was an interesting spin in that she had not intended to go back in time, however, I found that the use of the stones as a means of transport wasn't as clear as I would have liked. I definitely would be inclined to rate the steaminess of the romance as maybe sizzling, not 'hot damn'.

Highly recommended and well worth it.

I like me some Jamie!

What a great love story. The narrator was wonderful, but I don't know if it's a voice I would have chosen as Claire.

Can't wait to read book 2

The narrator is outstanding. There is a fair amount of sex but it isn't what I would consider to be graphic.

I Didn't Want It To End!

I loved this book because it was so different. One had to suspend his or her imagination, but it was not hard to do. I was rapt and listening way more than I should during the day. When it ended I was unhappy, I wanted it to go on and on. The narration was amazing. Davina Porter is one of the best - her accents were spot on. Listen to this book - you won't be disappointed!
