Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

Long, But Good

I'll admit there were moments when this book felt interminable, but overall a good listen. Porter is a great performer.

I have read this series twice. When I realized there was an audio version, I ordered the first two books immediately!

Having now finished the first volume, I can say that it was almost like experiencing it for the first time. The reader made it so real for me and with all the accents very believable.

The history, romance and characters make this a very enjoyabl

I love this series!

What made the experience of listening to Outlander the most enjoyable?

I read Outlander when it first came out 20 years ago and fell in love with the series. I held tightly to for a couple of years before I shared it. But when I did I shared with everyone. Last year I noticed the unabridged version and told my husband he had to listen to these books. He accused me of withholding them from him! He enjoyed listening while commuting to and from work (102 miles round trip). I listen while I work during the day. He'd come home each evening and "update" me on what Jamie and Claire were up to during his ride. He has already listened twice he enjoys them so much.

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Davina Porter is now the voice of Claire for me and my husband! She does an excellent job reading the story and giving life to the characters. I can't imagine anyone being able to give life to the books like Davina's reading.

Any additional comments?

I own the whole series 3 times over - hard copies, CDs and now from Audible.com.

Not amazing, but eventually addictive

Ok, so at first when I started this I loved it. There's time travel to the 18th century in Scotland where the main character who was a nurse in 1945 seems ahead of her time and smart and skilled in 1745. Also she falls in love, which I always like!! But then part way through the book it started to sound a little like a tacky romance novel written by Chandler Bing's mom thanks to all the way too descriptive sex scenes. I also started to hate the character of Claire a little because she started like this kind of pathetic woman who would always get in trouble and then wait around for her sexy man to come save her. But I do like the time travel and how they travel around Europe and in the second book you meet her daughter and go to France and apparently there are six of these so now at this point I'm kind of addicted and excited for book three because her and Jaime go to America and prepare for the revolutionary war! The woman who narrates is pretty good and does all the different accents pretty well, though she does get a little annoying after a while. Let me know if you want to know anything else before you get sucked in and start listeninig to all of them like I did!

interesting but too much gaelic

What did you like best about this story?

Interesting storyline... but a bit OTT with the romance scenes...

I liked learning about Scotland. Not too crazy about the 1700's....
