Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

Love this book..

This is a great book and the narrator does a pretty good job considering this is a huge book full of characters! But I can hear talking in the back ground at times.. it’s distracting.

Looking forward to this highly recommended series

But then, she takes on an armed and crazed soldier tyrant, battles a savage half starved wolf, wins over the chieftain, manipulates a whole Scottish clan to do her bidding And frees her man from prison chains while death by snowstorm stalks outside- in the space of half a chapter spanning twelve hours or less.....
And this is just the first instalment.
I do hope it doesn't go over the top too often.
Very very enjoyable up to that point, and did calm down reasonably once our heroines lover was out of the clutches of the English.
Slips into a little too much detail from time to time, but that is all neatly tied back into the story lines deep examination of the main characters responses to love and life.
Little worried that have left a link for my daughter to read also, but then, it actually is nothing she won't see everyday on TV or even on the street of any city I guess. Just very uncomfortably realistic.
Very well written and imaginative story. Narrator slightly annoying (no woman pouts and takes umbrage as often as this character does in parts...) but the Scottish lilt is just right, and the range of characters very well done by a single reader. Bring on the next episode 😄

Absolutely Ear Crack!!!!

Would you listen to Outlander again? Why?

YES, YES, YES! Outlander was very true to the reviews. I mean it was seduce, historical, funny, kept you wanting more and praying that it wouldnt end. I fell in love with the characters especially Jamie. It eas a world of its own. It made you want to know more about that time period, made you wonder what if such things as time travel can exsist and what would happen to a person and the fate of those around them if it were true.

What did you like best about this story?

Well, the author asked questions and made sure we had the answers. It did not leave things open and made you feel incomplete. If i never read the next book in the series I am comforted to know that this first installment encompassed so much of the characters lives that I can probably work out what happens next. In Fact it was written so well i really do not feel the need to read the next one.....but I will!!! :-)

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Davina, brings to life each character and each character wants and feels and thoughts. Even though some of the Scottish accents were almost the same and i had to retrace what character was saying what, for the most part she did a good job at making them distinguishable. I must say she is Claire for me ( even though claire can be annoying) and i cant imagine another's voice in her place. She also did a good job of making Jamie so touchable, yet so illusive my heart ached for I felt he was real.

Overall She did a wonderful job and she will be plesant to listen too!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No and Yes. No because sometimes i was afraid of what happened next and was so anxious about the situtations the characters had gotten themselves into. And Yes because it was soooo sweet and anticipating. It was

Any additional comments?

But this book it is a must!!!

Excellent!!

Epertly written, this book is an amazing adventure led by a capable and intelligent woman who doesn't get bogged down by the countless obstacles in her way. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time wondering what could possibly happen next. Seriously worth the credit, can't wait to get the next one!

Absolutely fantastic

I truly loved this story, it had me looking forward to going to bed every night to listen to another hour or so. Gosh Jamie has got to be the most gallant hero of all time. To think i have at least another 6 books to go in this series WOW. I love Davina Porter's narration too.

Best of its genre!

An engaging story balancing history, fiction, romance, adventure and a small amount of fantasy. Beautiful language and wonderfully written. The characters are well developed, engaging and aptly fulfill the role of protagonist and foe.

Best narrator yet from Audible books. Ms Porter has all the emotion and intonation of a professional actor, and she can be forgiven for not always perfecting some of the accents or voices. Her ability to cover the ground between child-like innocence to fierce combatant of Claire, the main protagonist wipes away any failings, if any at all, with the other characters.

Looking forward to the next one in the series.

My favorite book.

This book is well written. Diana Gabaldon is my favorite author. I've learned more about Scottish history in this book than I've learned about American history in school. I'm planning my third trip to Scotland and it all started with this book. The narrator, Davina Porter, is awesome. She makes the characters come to life. I've listened to this book over and over, it's that good. Five stars all the way.
