Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)

Spectacular Performance

Entranced by the Outlander series for television, anxious for the second season still months away, I decided to listen to Gabaldon's book on audible. She is such a wonderful writer I am thankful the tv series stays close to the story. I imagined I would find myself fast forwarding through the audio but found myself enjoying the incredible performance of Davina Porter with her variety of voices and changes between Scottish and British accents. I am starting the second book tonight!

Didn’t want it to end!

An epic story that you don’t want to stop. The characters are distinctive and personable. There were times when the narrator used such and imperious voice that I got turned off, but for the most part, she was f

Mesmerizing

If you could sum up Outlander in three words, what would they be?

Romantic, exotic, and very well-performed.

What did you like best about this story?

The author's description of the characters and the time are vivd. The story alternates suspenseful episodes with more domestic, introspective parts.

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

Her accents are wonderful. I loved the way she performed the Scottish accents.

Any additional comments?

Parts of the book are disturbing. The reader must be tolerant of a how very different time had very different manners of relations between the sexes and between parents and children. There is considerable domestic violence. The domestic violence is nevertheless overlaid with passion and attachment in the relationships. At times, I felt as though I was reading a tawdry romance novel, picked up at the supermarket (which is actually something I never read). I still have not completely reconciled how very much I enjoyed the story, and how harshly I judged the behavior of the male characters.

Exceptional story telling.

Love this book. One can not go wrong with Diana Gabaldon. I am not in the habit of re-reading books but, this one will be read again. Rich characters and brilliant dialogue.

Fascinating story, fantastic narration

This story is engrossing, for sure. I'd had the book sitting on my shelf for years. I'd begun reading it once, but the density and the peril of time travel made it difficult for me to get into. Then the audiobook was on sale so I thought why not try again?
Gabaldon is longer winded than I'd like. Much of the time I was listening, I was thinking about how it could have been condensed to better effect. (I'm totally fine with long stories so long as the length is used well.)
Porter does a fantastic job of narrating the book with skill and character.
