Publisher's summary

AD 1187. They call him the Great Defender. As Richard the Lionheart's most powerful general, Sir Juston de Royans is as moody as he is skilled. Reminiscent of the ancient warrior Achilles, Juston fights when it is necessary, instead choosing to command the powerful men beneath him. Never wrong in action or command, he has never lost a battle, and when he finds himself in the midst of a terrible siege at Bowes Castle, he predictably emerges the victor, with the lady of the keep as his prize.

And that's when the trouble begins.

When the never-wrong egotist meets the flame that will melt his frozen heart, a romance of epic proportions happens.

Better than Fantastic!

What another SUPER combination of Kathryn's story and Brads voice. I could listen to him all day. He brings every character to life with his ability to change from one to the next and I know exactly who is speaking. I get sucked into thinking I am right there watching everything play out. I have cried, laughed and cringed at times.

5 "BLOWN AWAY" STARS

This is my first book by Kathryn Le Veque and I must stay that I am blown away. She tells such a vivid story. This was a good story of lost but finding true long in the end. Justin of de Royans was such a great character. He was a no nonsense man that loved fiercely. I am searching for my next Le Veque now.

Brad Wills did an awesome job with narration. He made you feel like you were inside the story.

Good but....

I had the hardest time writing this review. I wasn't exactly sure how I felt about the book as I was listening and I wasn't any more sure after I was finished.

I found this book to be fairly historically accurate in both the politics and the social norms. I loved that since it had me running to the web and researching the whole Richard-Henry-Eleanor-Alyc-etc. I learned so much! Anyway, Men are used to getting their way and Juston is especially used to it. I found his attitude toward women, sex, and his illegitimate child hard to swallow. Yes, I'm sure that his attitudes are appropriate to the time and his station but as a modern reader (listener) it was not easy to like him. However, when he opened his heart he opened it way up...no holds, no fighting with himself. He enjoys the feeling of falling in love and goes with it. I liked that a lot. I get weary of the hero fighting his feelings up until the last page.

I found Emera incredibly annoying. Juston asks for her patience but at every turn she is hounding him to confess feelings he isn't even sure about. He's had this horrible tragedy and she can't seem to show him any patience or real understanding. She sounded youthful and spoiled.

The cast of secondary characters is intriguing. I am looking forward to listening to Christopher's story!

This is my first listen by narrator Brad Wills and I found him fine. His deep Juston-being-sexy voice is toe curling for sure. Otherwise I wouldn't say he's my favorite but I'd happily listen to him again.

So as you can see, I really don't know how I feel about the book but I finished it and I'm going to continue the series so I liked it well enough! It is more historical than other historical romances so that may or may not appeal to you.

Compassion was something that may get you killed.

He was a great war Lord, whose skills were wanted by those in power. Unfortunately, that meant not only he, but his family was targets from those that opposed him.
Once his family had been destroyed, his heart hardened and he became the Lord of Winter, because he caused devastation like the hardest of winters.
This is until a certain prisoner was thrust into his life. Then a thraw began, to defrost his ice cold heart.

Excellent!

At first,I didn’t know if I would like Justin de Royans; he was a tough, no nonsense, and initially appeared lacking compassion. Lady Emera was a good match for him; their romance builds slowly. The ending was edge of your seat wonderful. Kathryn gave her readers an exciting story well narrated by Brad Wills. Thank you both.

He's not so cold after all.

The Lord of Winter has a heart that needs to be warmed. I was happy to hear him find the one who could help him become a better and greater man. I enjoy the stories Kathryn Le Veque gives us and this one was no exception. Another good audio to add to my growing collection.

Annoying female lead

Narration was good but... The female lead is extremely stubborn, too stubborn to the point where she lacks logic and intelligence, which makes this book unbearable. Very annoying! I finished this book, but I am quite disappointed that I wasted my time as the stubbornness continued till the very end. Ugh! The male lead confused me quite a bit as well. He is stern with his men, but falters when it comes to the lady. Makes no sense. Nothing exciting. Predictable. This book is lacking in a lot. I wouldn't recommend this book.
