Publisher's summary

He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle Maxwell's deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night---or this man---is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed---a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite. Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren.

A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind---and the unwitting humans existing alongside them---from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands. Here, in the arms of the Breed's formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all.

I had to keep moving.

It took me quite a while to get through the first half of this book. If I sat down to listen, I fell asleep every time. The story was very slow to build and the narrator seemed to drone on without much distinction between characters. The 2nd part of the book was a bit better but still seemed very slow. I liked the concept well enough that I am going to give the 2nd book in the series a chance to see if perhaps it picks up. After reading all the reviews comparing this to the Blackdagger Brotherhood I decided to try this series. So far I am disappointed but will see how the next book goes.

Steamy with a different twist.

What did you like best about this story?

A different twist on the vampire legend of how they began.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Could not put it down.

Any additional comments?

Not for young ears, very steamy. I loved it. I look forward to listening to the rest of the series.

I'm impressed!

Most Vampire books are rather cliche. I'm impressed at the depth of the story, world and characters built in this series. They are very good and entertaining. Nice unexpected twists, strong believable drama, I highly reccomend this series.

The narrator is good, does different voices well, I always know who's talking. The men sound like men, and the women are all different feminine voices. Although, apparently, Savannah lost her Louisiana accent, but that's unfortunately common in a series. Her voice and pace modulate with the drama, making the reading interesting. Truly, I want to write a glowing review of the narrator. My only complaint is she whistles though her teeth waaay too often. Wearing headphones, the shrill sounds goes right into my brain! (ugh! Just close your teeth all the way, please!)

it was good

this is my 3rd series, first was BDB, then LotU, and now I'm trying to cram in these to squeeze out as much as I can before the Escape Package ends next month.... it was good, I dont know about GREAT but I enjoyed it for the most part. I will do 1 more and see if I get "hooked" by then, if not I will be frantic to find another series to indulge as much as possible before this sadly comes to an end!

Very medium

I was just not that interested. I would be mad if I used a credit on this one. The narrator had a problem with prununciation and it was pretty slow or maybe it was just me.

Heart, Strong, Humble and Sexy!

I find the world between vampires and human intriguing. The main characters I love in this book. The reality of Earth is a crowded place and is filled with many species. The narrator have the ability to bing the characters to life. The romance force the two realities together as
they come to terms with a new threat to the humans and vampires.

I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of this series!

And to think, I almost didn't spend my husband's credits on this one because of the cheesy silhouetted gravestones on the cover. It ended up being one of my favorite listens. I liked the narrator too, so happy she didn't give Lucan a fake dracula accent.

Fantastic audiobook and series.

I really loved the audiobook and can't wait for the rest of the series to become available on audible. The narration was paced good and the narrator did an excellent job of distiguishing the different personalities. Hopefull, the rest of this series will be available on audible soon.

Accept your faults and stop blaming others.

This book is a bit rapey. The fact that Lucan decided to have some naughty time with Gabriella while she was sleeping was a bit unsettling. When that scene occurred I felt as though I did not want to continue however I did push forward. Lucan and Gabriella are a good couple. They balance one another which is always a good thing when it comes to main characters.

I have this thing about tortured heroes. I am obsessed and I always fall in love with them however Lucan is not a tortured hero in the sense. I understand that he has been through a lot in his life with having crappy family members however instead of being tortured he became self-deprecating. The whole woe is me continuously throughout the book just hurt me to no end. The fact that he not only treated Gabriella awful he also treated everybody around him equally awful. I don't have an issue with that because sometimes a character feels that is the only way that they will be able to cope through life however he did not apologize to anybody about his actions.

He did not even apologize to Gabriella he just told her that he loved her and wanted to be with her forever. There are certain people in books that deserve apologies because of all of the things that they have been through with in their lives. Gabriella to me is the prime example of a person who deserves an apology. She dealt with so much crap from Lucan and yet she was deemed unworthy of getting an apology.

I don't understand if it is because he is an alpha male and that in turn means that an apology does not occur with him or if this is what happens with in this series. Not once did he apologize for putting her through the wringer and always blaming her for everything that went wrong with in this life since he met her. As a woman I don't think that I would be okay with somebody blaming me for a friend's death and not apologizing afterwards.

The story was good the action was great and the traitor was not expected. Lara Adrian made you think that the traitor was a warrior because he was out here doing suspect things but that was not the case. Also the leader of the Rogues was not expected either. I enjoy surprises when I read a book because there are times where everything is too obvious and it gets tiring and old.

I don't know if I am going to be 100% invested in this series like I am with the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. BDB has a lot of great characters, that yes are flawed, but understand that they are flawed and does not blame everybody else for their issues. Within that series the hero always seems to overcome his struggles and tries to be better. Lucan did not try to be better. He is going through a major life moment but yet it was never resolved.

I will move on to Kiss of Crimson by Lara Adrian because I do want to see certain characters get a book. I just hope that the heroes here on out don't believe that they have no faults and everybody around them should be blamed for their issues and short comings and not his.
