Publisher's summary

He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle Maxwell's deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night---or this man---is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren.

A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind---and the unwitting humans existing alongside them---from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Very good start to a series that kicks-butt! :)

The first Midnight Breed book: it's very good. Lucan is sexy. Gabrielle is also great. This series is often compared to BDB. However, if you keep reading the series, you won't regret it. You'll also realize the series is nothing like BDB.
Im now starting the 5th book in this series. And wow!! I'm so glad I listened to all the hype. It's all true. By book 4, I went ahead and downloaded the rest of the series.

You won't regret it!!

(p.s. the narrator is good I the first few books, but she really gets better as the series continues.)

Not bad. Not bad at all!

I don't know why I was so hesitant to start this book. I had it in my wishlist for over a month.

I love reading books that are part of a series for continued enjoyment with characters and a world that an author has created. This world is pretty darn good!

Sexy but with a good storyline and a bit of believable horror to back up the chemistry between the two main characters and cement this world Lara has created. Which was well narrated by Hillary.

Really looking forward to reading the rest of the Warriors books!

One thing I will mention is that I started with A Touch Of Midnight which was a short story of Gideon and Samantha. This book came out after these characters were well loved in the main series for many books. And after reading this book I can see why. As I wasn't so enthused with their story, I would recommend reading a few books in the series 1st before backpedaling to the prologue. I probably would've enjoyed it more.

Great story, horrible narrator.

The characters have good back story, if you can get past the bland depressing delivery of the narrator. This was an enjoyable, sometimes predictable story, but it was hard to get past the narrator.

Blood Fever, or luke warm.

An okay start to a series, but I still have my feelers out to see if it a keeper for the whole series. A friend at work suggested it to me, she loved it. I thought it was not a bad start but I'm not sure quite yet. I will read the next one and see how it goes, hopefully there will be a sale. Story line has potential although I didn't feel overly connected to the characters and they did stupid things that annoyed me. Spoilers ahead --- Ok first off, how dumb can a woman be when she believes a man when they say "I can't make you pregnant and I'm disease free" when they barely know each other. You and I know he can't but why does she believe when she thinks he is a human… dumb, dumb, dumb. Second off, I don't understand the whole cutting herself, and then making it seem like it is natural because she is a breed mate. It may be only me but that is messed up and was not necessary to enhance the storyline, especially since that seemed to be the only way she was able to get him, not cool. And I have a hard time with her being taken away from her life and she is okay with it, and basically grovels to Lucan, even after she finds out he had broken into her house at the beginning and molested her when she wasn't aware of it being real. Narrator was fine overall, but her Spanish accent sucked.

WOW!!!

This is one of those series that you have to take a minute and think about. Do you really want to invest time, energy, and money/credits into. It took me along time to get the second book at the first one. I thought after reading the first on that it wasn't my kind of series. It seemed too unreal (Not as if vampires are real and all), but I was on the fence about this series.

I had to go back and reread the book. It was a good thing. I had missed some details that helped me understand the story more. Now I am addicted to the series and I am in a rush to get them all and devour them.

In this series you see the age old battle of good vs evil. And a battle to save, well the world what else? It is a fun and entertaining book, and the series is full of studly and muscle bound warriors who want to find their other half and protect her. Oh and save the world from rough vampires of course.

It is a good series and the narrator does a wonderful job with the story. She really makes the words come alive for you. It is in my top ten best series list, and one that I plan on rereading again and again.

WAY TO START A SERIES

Once I started I could NOT hit pause. This was a great story. The NARRATOR GETS BIG props and HIGH 5's she totally made this a series that I will continue to buy and listen to AS LONG as SHE remains the narrator.
Lucan and Gabby opposites but lots of chemistry from the very beggining. I am just sorry I had not heard of Lara Adrians stories before. As they say "Better late than never". Ready for part 2! Happy listening, be ready to get sucked in.

I Really Enjoyed It

I liked the main characters a lot. Lucan was sexy and his reluctance to take Gabrielle as his mate was understandable if not frustrating. Gabrielle was a tough protagonist who offered just enough confidence and dominance to compliment her warrior mate.

The vampires were a bit modern for my more classical tastes (think LOTU and BDB without being too overblown) but it didn't stop me from enjoying the story. The plot pretty much existed to progress the relationship of the two main characters, but that's okay because it was a fun ride. The only thing I really didn't care for was the narration. Hillary Huber just seems to keep popping up in a bunch of fantasy romance novels and I always realize it too late. She sounds as if she's on a few too many painkillers and I feel like it detracts from the overall immersion into the story at times.

Best urban vampire series!

Lara Adrian's particular vampire world is so well-crafted, diverse, action packed, dramatic and sexy, it really has only one other competitor--J.R. Ward's BDB.

I was thrilled to get this in a recent sale, since I've read the book a couple times years ago, and have enjoyed a couple more audible versions of later books in the series for many re-listens. Nico, Rio and Tegan's stories in particular are incredibly memorable and I love a revisit with them annually.

Unlike so many series, this series opener is just as good as the next few. Sometimes the author is working things out in the first book, and get better as they go one. Not so with Adrian. She really spent time working out the details of later books while writing the first one. Her writing is clean, crisp and tight. No extraneous meanderings and over-narrating inner thoughts. The action is fast-paced and the story plot continues long thru the series. Like Ward's BDB, Adrian created a fantastic plausible world (ok, as plausible as any vamp story can be) overlapping our own, and an interesting vamp creation backstory. What is great about revisiting this early tale after having read the series, is that I can admire her early foreshadowing and her craft in her vision of how things would play out much later in the story arc. THAT'S real talent, IMHO.

In my alltime list of best series, I put this as a tie for number one with BDB, but I would note that Adrian is much cleaner and tighter in the story telling.

Really really appreciating Lara Adrian again, even hundreds of other authors later.

Get this book and prepare for a long ride as you get lost in this series.

Meh

The sex scenes were frequent and nicely written but that's my only real praise. The story was groan-inducing, especially towards the end. The biggest problem was that the narrator was so flat and artificial; Siri reading the sex scenes would have probably been more exciting.
