Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his-until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan's clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer. The illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn-and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband makes her crave his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin's strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons-and embrace a love that means more than revenge or land.

I bought this book on January 17th. Got to 55% and got bored so I read another 30 or 40 books in between. I started it again last night and I'm giving it my all, trying to finish it. I really like Ewan and his brothers. And I really, really like Crispin. AND I really, really, really HATE Duncan Cameron. Mairin, I'm not too sure about. She goes from a whimp to a smartass in nothing flat. I just can't seem to like her. I've read a couple of Ms. Banks' contemporary book and I liked them much better than this historical. I doubt very much if I'll read the other two books in the series. Oh, the sex was quite nice,
As to the narrator: Ms. Potter is one of the best narrators out there. What more can I say?
I love books, it's my great escape.
I have not been so excited about finding a new series in a long time. I have much love for the Highlander romances and this one is terrific. Ewan McCabe is the oldest brother. He meets and falls for Mairin who is the illegitimate daughter of the king. Mairin has been in hiding for most of her life. Ewan's clan has been devastated. Mairin has prized property and the finances to save his clan. It’s not love at first sight but it gets very steamy for these two on the road to the happy ever after. I also liked the danger and intrigue which added an additional layer to this story. One of the most touching elements is Marin’s relationship with Ewan’s son from his first marriage. I totally loved this story and I am hooked. Can’t wait to get the rest of the books and hear the stories of the other brothers which were hinted at in this story. This is a promising new series and honestly I was hooked after the first 30 minutes. Great story, great characters and great plot and the narration is outstanding. I am a Maya Banks fan now! I have listened to this one 2 times already. ****Five Stars****
I am quiet and love being comfortable. I love curling up in a corner either reading or listening to a nice romantic book.
I began reading this book simply because I love Highland stories, but goodness I got so caught up in it, I couldn't put it down. It was so captivating from beginning to end! I also found out that this is one in a trilogy but audible does not mention that and I have no idea if they are going to bring the other 2 books! So frustrating, I really don't want to get it from somewhere else. The author did a really good job with this story, I hope the other two books are as great and the the narrator (my first hearing her) also did a good job. I recommend this book with 8 stars!
It comes a time when you have to choose between listening to audible or going to bed.
This was an excellent start to the McCabe highlander series. This was an engrossing read by Mays Banks. As usually she delivers on a Great highlander listen. This was well worth the credit....on to the next book in the series!!
I haven't read the printed version, but can't imagine that the audio would be better because of the incredible narrator.
I loved Mauren, she was strong, sweet, funny, and loving. I loved that she would speak whatever was in her mind out loud...that she was so open.
The wonderful Scottish accents.
when Mauren and Ewen were separated and the King's assistant decided they weren't married.
I like Maya Banks books and historical books as well, but these are by FAR my favorite Banks books...there was action, romance, and wonderful story.
Mom, and caregiver. Variety in my music and book libraries. I love a good romance or mystery. In order to be worth my time and money
I love a good highland story. I enjoy a strong dominant male. I'm not thrilled with this story though. I kept expecting more relationship - most of the story was around sex though. I don't dislike stories that have sex in them but this is nearly all about sex.
She seemed a little bored in reading the story. She isn't a bad reader but didn't seem interested in the story. If the narrator isn't interested - what hope does the story have in keeping the interest in the reader.
More interaction, more depth.
Maya Banks is a good author - I'm not terribly happy with this book though. Seems more like a bodice ripper than a romance.
Hello, my name is Teresa and I'm an addict.
I only have great things to say about this audiobook. Hot romance, sexy highlanders, evil nemesis, and feel good atmosphere. The side characters are great and the story leading to the next in the series makes me want to read them soon. I loved how Ewan thought that he could tell her how to mend her ways, knowing he was in for a big surprise. The story flew by so fast I was shocked when the story ended. Narrator was great, and for all those fans of highlanders books this is a must read.
Yes, I would recommend this book. I thought the book is well written and the reader was excellent.
I like Mairin b/c she's independent and head strong. She stood up for what she believed in regardless of the consequences.
Mairin tried to tell Ewan that how he kissed her was wrong. Not with tongue. LOL
This is a good 1st book of the series. It introduced all 3 McCabe brothers and their characters. This book is about Ewan and Mairin and their journey to find each other. I thought Maya's description of Mairin's education about kissing/sex from a nun was really funny.
Say something about yourself!
I’m always worried about historical novels…will they get the language right, will they hold true to the themes of the period….but since it was Maya Banks I had to take a shot, and was NOT disappointed! Wonderful story, and series, that made me laugh and made me cry. Couldn’t have asked for more!
This was a good listen. It was a departure from Maya Banks usual writing. I was disappointed because it seemed like Ms. Banks channeled the writing of Julie Garwood and her book, "The Bride". Lots of discussions of "her duties" as his wife. Lots of conversations that entail, "Wife,....." or "Husband...." I just rolled my eyes when they spoke this way as it reminded me of the Julie Garwood's writing. I can't imagine anyone talking to his liege the way the hero of the story did. "If I wanted you dead, you already would be, my lord" That was not believable at all to me. Nevertheless, it was an entertaining read and I was pleased with this book and will listen to the others. I am looking forward to the third installment of this book where the main character is a fighter as well as a lady.
