Alex MacLeod's virile physique, fearsome reputation, and renowned fighting skills have helped him master to perfection the role of a hardened mercenary. On a secret mission to protect his clan, he must keep his true purpose well hidden. But his dangerous endeavor is threatened by a beautiful woman he saves from outlaws, never dreaming she will appear at court and put his plans in jeopardy.
Meg Mackinnon needs a strong husband by her side to defend her clan's holdings, but her search has been hampered by burning fantasies of the midnight rescuer whose smoldering blue eyes and raw sensuality left her breathless. Alex pretends to be a mercenary with no loyalties, yet he is clearly much more. As Meg challenges Alex to reveal all his secrets, the stakes grow perilously high, especially for the bold woman who dares to unmask a highlander.

"[McCarty] brilliantly incorporates exciting historical events and personages into a sizzling love story complete with multifaceted characters and a compelling plot." (Romantic Times)
I normally like books about Highlanders, but I've noticed, although the names of the handsome Scottish Warriors change, as well as their Lady Fair, with a differing plot, there seems to be a sameness about the stories in this series. No imagination needed, no surprises.
I've previously enjoyed stories narrated by Antony Ferguson, once I got used to the way he structures his sentences, but during his reading of "Highlander Unmasked" he sound more sing-song at times, which was off-putting.
I can't say it's not a well written book, but I didn't particularly enjoy it.
Edwina "I Love Books'
Margaret Mackinnon, she knew what she wanted and she went after if. She was brave, wealthy and beautiful oh an intelligent!!
No he is just not good at differentiation voices and character especially the female voices.
Margaret MacKinnon has been sent to the Court of Kings James at Whitehall by her father to find a husband. Margret know has Meg needs a husband who can help her and her brother lead there Clan once there father dies. Margaret's brother heir to her father the Chieftain of the Clan is mentally challenged. Megs choice of husband must be able to help lead her clan without wanting to over thrown her brother.
Alex MacLeod has been sent to the Court of King James to spy for his brother Rory and the other Highland Chiefs. They know King James has a plan to war against his own people in the Highlands. Kings James favors the Lowlanders and believes the Highlanders are a bunch of ruffian thugs not worthy to lead or run there own part of Scotland.
Meg in introduced to Alex by her mother Rosalind. The two have a immediate attraction but they have at cross purposes. Alex is not looking to marry at this time and Meg is determined to have him. Who will win the war of wills is what this story is about.
The story has a steady pace, is very sensual. All the characters are very likable except the villains of
course, who aren't supposed to be liked. The story and back story of each character is very well written. It just took to long for the Alex and Meg to really get together and buy the time they do the story is over. No epilog and the ending seemed rushed. However I still Highly Recommend Highlander Unmasked!!
Enjoyed the audio book very much until the second half. "Meg" just keeps making things harder and harder for the hero. Seems to me, he would have told her to buzz off by the end of the story. She didn't listen to him or any one else. Created all kinds of chaos. She got on my nerves.
Not a bit. I'll be wary of the rest of this series, however.
Mmmm. I think Meg's mother, Rosalund. Mr. Ferguson did an excellent job with all the characters - even Meg - in my opinion. His reading of Meg was probably the only reason I got through the story. Meg annoyed me. A more whiny reading of her would probably have been more appropriate. Thank goodness the narrator didn't do it.
Oh, yes. It was extremely heart-felt and emotional which I always love. Just wish Meg would have been smarter.
I love being swept away by a new romance and thankfully Audible's ever growing Library means I get to indulge myself over and over again
Who wouldn't love a pained, tormented handsome Highland hero torn between love and duty. Good romance story with likeable characters, well written and narrated. It definately had the mmm.... factor.
Worth the credit - Absolutely YES.
This is just a okay highlander romance story that could have been so much better if it was not so long. This is not historical lit, it's a romance between a hero who has issues between his duty to his clan and what he should easily be able to determine is his great love. I think the pace given the circumstance of the story could have move along faster. It is one of the things stopping me from moving onto to the final book. I am sure I'll purchase the next book. So if highland romance (not a steamy romance) but good romance is what you have a need for, then this series, may be for you. I would recommend Karen Marie Moning's highlander series for fun and romance and Maya Banks steaming romanic highlander stories.
I cannot imagine. Reading. This book. The way the. Narrator read. it. The. meaningless. Pauses. Distracted from. Any. Meaning the plot. and. Characters could have. possibly communicated to. The reader.
A different narrator!!!
Punctuation, cadence, and intonation are essential for a narrator to understand and execute. I was completely distracted by the halting, choppy speaking.
Not without a different narrator. I usually enjoy this author but I can't pay any attention to the story when distracted by bizarre narration. I didn't finish the book, so I really couldn't say.
Frustrating. I listen to these books to relax! Relaxing was impossible. I felt like I was riding in a car with someone who was trying to learn to drive a stick shift up hill!
Wonderful follow up to book one I love how Monica's stories flow. At times they just seem to pick up without a miss. Great narrator Antony Furguson brings the highlands to life.
